Hello everyone,

It's time I introduced myself. I'm Duncan Pierce, and I work broadly in
the agile/xp camp as a consultant, mentor and developer - at least
that's what I usually say. But what I really do is try to get involved
with interesting problems so I can learn something new.

I've been interested for a long time in ways of increasing "leverage",
that is, achieving grander goals, for me and for others. So, I'm
interested in:

  * more advanced programming languages (write less, get more
functionality), and I'm developing my own open source language for
this;

  * more advanced ways of sharing and reusing software within and
between organizations (don't write anything, get more mileage out of
the functionality someone else already has) and did a PhD on this
topic;

  * better ways to work together in teams to produce software (working
together through shared process and practise), so I've been involved
with the XP community in the UK since about 2000;

  * better understanding how people's emotional side affects their
interactions with others on one-to-one and organizational bases
(working together through common goals and mutual emotional
involvement), and that's why I'm here.

My current thinking (and it may be somewhat naive at this stage) is
that fear is the most common cause of resistance, but that overcoming
fear helps people to feel stronger (I'm a rock climber so I might be a
bit biased). When resistance is expressed there is potential to get to
the root emotional cause, and translate the resistance into change that
is positive. And then I saw the name of this list....
