Folks,

I bumped into the ever active Leigh Honeywell the
other day at the Open Source Conference (*) here
at the University of Toronto. She pointed out that
this list has been rather quiet lately. I thought
I might see if people were still awake.

It's been a rough couple of years, I think, on the
'Net for "peer-to-peer journalism." The dot.com
bust took the wind out of net.development, and
many of us might be looking at other things. On the
other hands, developments like the Iraq War and
Dean for America have made real improvements in the
practical reality of alternative journalism.

So, I was wondering what everyone was up to and how
things were getting on for you. If you'd care to tell
us about yourself (again), at least I'm listening.

To start, then, I am the Founder and Editor of
MeatballWiki, a little design collective of online
community leaders and developers. Mostly we focus
on wikis and weblogs.

After I graduated from a Bachelors of Computer
Science at Carleton U. in Ottawa and my dot.com job
ended shortly after, I went on a five month trip to
Europe and the States, which was the first time I
had tried to use my online diary as a real online
diary. When my trip through the States was, um,
unpleasant, it served as a foil to write down how
I felt. It also made me a target of unwanted
attention and, um, unpleasant strangers who seemed
to know too much about my life.

Since then, disaffected by my whole experience, I
tried my hand at politics by working on the campaign
staff of John Manley, then Deputy Prime Minister of
Canada, in a fight against Paul Martin for leadership
of the Liberal Party of Canada. I really enjoyed that,
and I hope to stick with it. I have also started a
Masters degree in Knowledge Media Design here at
the University of Toronto (trying to get on top of
this rapidly changing world), which is how I ended
up meeting Leigh once again, and why I'm writing to
you once again.

So, how about y'all? I hope everything has gone well.

SS
