Upon reflection, I think that the best thing to do is to omit the SS 
card, birth certificate, etc. and leave copies with the emergency 
contacts.  I am reasonably convinced that (i) the password 
protection offered by Adobe may not be sufficient and (ii) medical 
personnel would likely not need the information on an expedited 
basis in an emergency.

The problem with encryption is that it is fairly difficult to explain and 
it is entirely possible that the hospitals may not have, in the 
emergency room, the level of computer technology necessary to run 
an encryption program.  (This is somewhat odd given the nature of 
medical technology these days, but I recently was in a situation 
where I discovered that a hospital PC only had Adobe Reader 3.1.)
