Document Readers

We have hundreds of thousands of form documents that have been scanned but their contents, such name, address, loan date, etc, were never transferred to an electronic database.  I now have the unenviable task of figuring out the most economical way of extracting the data from the scanned document images (also many on microfiche).  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Is there technology available that can scan the images and accurately translate the data to a database on a volume basis?  Are there services who might be geared up to do this?  Any help would be appreciated.
