For something like a mainstream romance novel that would be quite 
realistic.

For a mainstream offset printing press skipping the advance has an 
entirely different meaning re: distributing the earnings over time and 
avoiding the rist of not earning out.  But I find not offering advances 
is more often assocated with a press not predicting many sales ;)  
Which is why the author not offered an advance needs some other method 
for estimating likely sales volume and so earnings [which is why I run 
a site that reports sales epublisher figures].
