Agreed, Liz. Average Joe Johnson doesn't lose sleep over DRM or which version of ePub is the best or eInk over computer screen. They'll want a device that is simple to use and comes from a company they trust with content they are interested in reading. The Amazon Kindle. Personally, I like the design of the Sony Reader better but Amazon did their homework and came up with a compelling enough design that, until recently, was continually sold out. I would never read for pleasure on a computer screen and this is the market they are after. As content providers, we really need to encourage ebook reading period, on devices that let people take and read the content sans computer, like on a train. How many people who have heard of ebooks probably think they all have to be read while sitting at a desktop? We don't know. There are a thousand and one variable that come into play for the slow growth of ereading, that could be one of them. Ever since I purchased my first ebook 5 years ago for my PocketPC, I couldn't understand why everyone wasn't jumping on this band wagon, it was the greatest thing since sliced bread as far as I was concerned. Now, Amazon has raised the level of awareness for ereading, and that should be good for everyone. For us, ereading is a no-brainer. But it is not for the vast majority of people (our sales would show if it were true). We need to get behind something (anything) when it is squarely aimed at growing the readership of our respective books, authors and companies in an ebook format. Aaron J. Everyone here (probably) is already an ebook reader and so has established their likes and dislikes as far as hardware is concerned. Amazon, being smarter than that, deliberately designed and marketed the Kindle to appeal to NON-ebook readers, and that is precisely why it has been a huge success at least insofar as continuing demand applies. And the market of NON-ebook readers is huge compared to the alternative. And Amazon has a number of new services in the wings for the next generation--or at least has included the hardware for them in the unit.I have to find it ironic that when you mention ebooks where print readers congregate the discussion of their potential success inevitably devolves into "they can't succeed because I would never read one." Here, the song is "I wouldn't want one so it's obviously not going to last long."When analyzing the market for anything, injecting one's personal likes and dislikes into the discussion is irrelevant.LizElizabeth Burton, Executive EditorZumaya Publications LLCOpening Doors to the Creative Mindhttp://www.zumayapublications.comOn Apr 28, 2008, at 11:39 AM, Marion Gropen wrote:I always looked, but didn't buy the e-readers, until this one. _________________________________________________________________ Back to work after babyhow do you know when youre ready? http://lifestyle.msn.com/familyandparenting/articleNW.aspx?cp-documentid=5797498&ocid=T067MSN40A0701A [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ Post a message: ebook-community [[at]] * Unsubscribe: ebook-community-unsubscribe [[at]] * Switch to digest: ebook-community-digest [[at]] * Switch to normal: ebook-community-normal [[at]] * Put mail on hold: ebook-community-nomail [[at]] * Administrator: ebook-community-owner [[at]] * (* == yahoogroups.com) -------------------------------------------------------Yahoo!
