I buy e-books because:

1. They /are/ cheaper than paperbacks -- at least, all the e-books /I/
buy are. If they're not, I don't buy them (let he with ears, hear).

2. They are easier to read than paperbacks. I can increase the size of
the font to accommodate my aging eyes, I can adjust the brightness of
the screen, I can lay my PocketPC flat and not worry about it closing on
me, I can put it in a ziploc (tm) and read in the hot tub, and I can
read in bed in a darkened room. Of course, many of these things don't
apply to PDF files, but then PDF is a pre-print format, and not really
an e-book format so it doesn't really matter to me. If I get something
in PDF I really have to read, I print it -- that's what it was designed for.

3. I can put dozens, if not hundreds, of e-books on my PDA and carry
then with me wherever I go. Next month I will be taking a two week
vacation, and I will have plenty to read the entire time, including up
to 24 hours on airplanes.

If you insist that e-books are PDF and must be read at a desktop
computer I think you will find that they are not as convenient as paper
books. If you can give up these two out-dated concepts I think you will
find that for most purposes they are at least as good, if not better
than, a paperback.
