I think Chris offers you a nice balance with that and I know some author/publishers use exactly that. I have been involved in arguments over copyright for years, and my conclusion is that most people respond well to simple reminders and probably with a thanks for helping kind of phrase in a short copyright notice. Some will do their best to take and distribute for a variety of motives, and some espouse - I think sincerly though I am still not sure - philosophies to support not paying. Though I do not have the technical expertise I believe it is possible to 'watermark' a pdf so that at least it is possible to trace the copy which has been used for copying, should that occur. But the main field in which breaches by copying seem to take place is pop music.
