Excellent question. Many people understand this for print books, but think the ebook is simply a 'thin air' product. The issue of big publishers, which you touch on in another post, in relation to this is that they are not seriously yet into ebooks.

By this I mean that the deals that you elsewhere suggest drive down prices are deals done over 'back list'. Here there is not exactly a great effort  to shape the book for the new formats. But the costs of new works, if the income is going to come largely from ebooks, is a different matter. They will either rue the deals they are making now, or think they can gain income that enables them to set up their own system for eretail.

While I think there has been some expansion of the total market for books in the US, UK and western Europe, it remains to be seen whether it is enough to keep publishers going at current ebook prices. My impression is the expansion has a lot to do with satisfying niches not supplied in the past. We will begin to know towards the end of another decade.
