Actually, the number of 26 was first advanced back in 2004 by Fictionwise,
when planning to open eLibwise. But it didn't have any press back then,
because the industry was so new and eLibwise wasn't up and running yet. The
only reason I know about it is because I was in the room when Steve (or was
it Scott?) Pendergrast talked about it at EPICon 2004.

But several librarian friends and I, in batting this around, decided that
(based on indie ebook pricing of novels at or below mass market for the same
genre and length) they were basing this on the wear and tear of a newer mass
market book lent consistently through the year. They are looking pretty
raggedy after a year, unless you get some really kind, bookloving readers in
line for it.

It's all well and good for librarians to try and compare ebook to hard bound
or trade, but only NY Conglomerate is pricing that way. Indie isn't, and
Fictionwise was build (initially) with a lot of indie and not as much NY
Conglomerate.

At the same time, I've posted on some of these librarian discussions and
agreed that 26 seems really low to me for library use. I'm realistic and
willing to seek middle ground with them. I'd be willing to consider 100
lends for a library, but I won't consider unlimited lends, especially since
US authors get no remuneration for library lending. At that point, it is the
choice of the library to repurchase the license or not, just as they have
the choice to repurchase a paper book when it wears out or not. They can let
it go out of circulation and depend (if it's available elsewhere) on
interlibrary loan.
