Embedding sound?

Hello all,

Quick question: what is the current standing on the ability to create ebooks with embedded audio files? I've heard that Acrobat can embed them directly, but I don't own it. Is there another program (OpenOffice?) that can embed files into little "players," allowing the book to eventually be saved to .pdf?

How is this normally done? Separate sound files included with the book, and links in the book to those files? Also: it occurs to me that a powerpoint presentation could handle this; do people make ebooks that are powerpoint files? Any other ideas?

(Sorry for sounding naive here... I'm assuming the current industry has a way of dealing with this. I just don't know what it is.)

This is true, but I also spend time volunteering in the schools. I 
spend more time in the primary school here than in the middle school, 
but the kids seem more enthusiastic. Last year, they offered an iPod 
for the 7th grader who won had the most AR points. My daughter who got 
several hundred wasn't even in the running. I'm still hoping. If I 
have the time though, I might contact the AR people and see what kind 
of statistics they have on reading trends.
