------=_NextPart_000_007D_01D1248A.DD5BC200 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I recently read an ebook which had an imbedded link to a hotel in Paris (an actual hotel). When I tapped the link on my tablet it opened a browser and took me to the web site of the hotel. It was interesting in that it gave me an idea of the setting where that scene took place. I don' think that could have been done with a version 2 epub. It's an interesting concept and opens interesting possibilities. It could open potential revenue streams, in that links to enterprises could be inserted in ebooks for a fee. Publishers would manage the link revenue and the author would get what's left. I realize it would be a very small fraction of a penny for each connection, but revenue is revenue. It is not just images that can be inserted in an ebook now. I recently took an ebook and converted it to a zip file (change file name from sample.epub to sample.zip). I then opened the zip file and dumped the contents into a folder. Using an ebook editor I then inserted links to mp3 files which I imbedded in the book. I changed the contents of the directory back to a zip file and then changed the extension to epub. Voila! I had an epub with imbedded music and it worked. There`s a catch though. My original epub ballooned. A 200 page book went from 560KB to 46 MB. But... I hadn't taken the Internet into consideration. I could have just imbedded links to let's say YouTube and it would shrink the book size to about 2 or 3 MB. That takes care of size for the music tracks but does not take care of performer`s or composer`s rights. That blew that brilliant idea out the window. There is potential though for imbedded media files in instructional ebooks. Things like recipe and do it yourself ebooks with imbedded videos of the various steps required to produce an end product are an ideal use for multimedia in ebooks. With the low cost of video, the author owning the rights to the media files and the internet it would be a financially viable proposition. I think publishers would bite on this concept. The only catch would be that the reader would require Internet access and this would limit the potential market. "EPUBs are zipped files that are essentially an entire website." And interesting comment, since the early ebooks included formats that were very similar to websites - within the limits of then current offerings. My comment would be that, while there are clear advantages for interaction with Epub3, "plain vanilla Epub2" still looks sufficient for most self- and small publishers.
