The file size is an issue that is reducing as Ram capacity rises and as bandwidth grows [if genuine new piping is laid or if air borne and satellite connections become cheap enough for mass market.]. But there is a legacy issue on size with older equipment and with low end hardware. The use of links can also be to files on one' own website, giving some contact with ebooks sold by third parties. But there is also a lot of additional work in creating the interactive book. As you pointed out, copyright issues mean that most of what one uses needs to be one's own work, or licensed. The potentials are great, but it is not clear [to me anyway] whether a sufficient market exists.
