together could mean one of many things!
1)  together as in - in the same room, women at the back,
2) together as in women at one side, men on the other
3) together as in jumbled and anyone can stand wherever they like in the 
line.

I prefer the latter, but 2 would be a great improvement too, and probably 
more palatable to the more conservative among us!
