Hi cryonauts,

for starters, it would suffice to ask/implore a priest / pastor to accompany
the suspension process in a whole(!)-body patients (non-neuro patients).
Such a photo would act as the first footprints on the moon!

The problem:
 1. There shall be no living patient (bad for our Supporters, primarily from
academia).
 2. If neuro patients, the priest / pastor will certainly not come.

If no one takes, we need from our community a volunteer ... he learn priest
/ pastor. He must have the courage / strength / have our support ... Endure
discussions (on his way there) 
within the church for decades.
The problem: Celibacy
The churches have 2 problems. Lack of money and a successor/junior problem.
It might be an idea to mutual benefit. The seed would be - through
compromise - spread. If need be neuro patients are separated from the
patient's whole body space ...

I would try it in Asia with Buddhism and patients who want to resurrect
electronically. Islam, for example subsequent transmutation / teleportation
in an animal (horse, falcon).
For each religion / culture can find a biological or inorganic idea. Or a
little of each.
I give all writers here right, who think that one should use locally
religion / culture and not(!) invent a new religion / culture. This
overwhelmed us and the people there.
And I have spoken of the fear of dying? No! I make it palatable :-)

fur den Anfang durfte es genugen einen Priester/Pfarrer zu bitten(!), den
Suspensionsprozess bei einem Ganzkorperpatienten (nicht Neuropatienten) zu
begleiten. 
Solch ein Foto wurde wirken, wie der erste FuBstapfen auf dem Mond!

Das Problem:
1. Es darf kein lebender Patient sein (schlecht fur unsere rationalen
Befurworter, vor allem aus der Wissenschaft).
2. Bei Neuropatienten wird der Priester/Pfarrer sicherlich nicht kommen.

Wenn sich niemand findet, brauchen wir jemanden aus unseren Reihen der
Priester/Pfarrer wird. Er muss den Mut/die Kraft/unseren Beistand haben ...
Diskussionen (auf seinem Weg dorthin) innerhalb der Kirche uber Jahrzehnte
auszuhalten. Das Problem: Zolibat
Die Kirchen haben 2 Probleme. Geldmangel und ein Priester / Pfarrer
Nachwuchsproblem. Es ware vielleicht eine Idee zu beiderseitigen Nutzen. Die
Saat ware - mittels Kompromisse - gestreut. Notfalls mussen Neuro-Patienten
von den Ganzkorperpatienten raumlich getrennt werden.

Ich wurde es in Asien mit Buddhismus und Patienten versuchen, welche
elektronisch wiederauferstehen wollen. Islam, z.Bsp. spatere
Transmutation/Teleportation in ein Tier (Hengst, Falke)
Fur jede Religion / Kultur lasst sich etwas Biologisches oder anorganisches
finden. Oder eine Mischung aus allem.

Ich gebe allen Schreibern hier recht, die meinen, dass man ortlich
vorhandene Religionen / Kulturen nutzen soll und keine(!) neunen erfinden.
Das uberfordert uns und die Menschen dort.
Und habe ich von der Angst vor dem Sterben gesprochen? Nein! ich mache es
schmackhaft :-)

Subject: bicarbonate not useful as a buffer

I made a mistake in my earlier suggestion of using bicarbonate as a buffer
in a glycerol/wine solution. Turns out bicarbonate destabilizes some of
the polyphenols in wine.

Abstract
  Polyphenols can oxidize in culture medium and produce artifacts in cell culture studies. However, the extent and mechanism of the oxidation of resveratrol, a polyphenol abundant in red wine, is unclear. We investigated the oxidation of resveratrol in vitro and the effects of various components of the culture medium on the degradation of resveratrol and the production of H(2)O(2). We found that 96% of resveratrol at a concentration of 200 microM was degraded in Base Modified Eagle Medium after 24 h of incubation at 37 degrees C, producing about 90 microM of H(2)O(2). Including sodium bicarbonate in the medium markedly stimulated resveratrol degradation and H(2)O(2) production. In sum, we found that bicarbonate ions played a crucial role in the oxidative degradation of resveratrol in vitro
 , and that the degradation of resveratrol can be avoided by withdrawing sodium bicarbonate from the medium. A mechanism for the oxidation of resveratrol is proposed.

Abstract
  Dietary phenolic antioxidants have been shown to prevent LDL modifications mediated by several physiologic oxidants including peroxynitrite. However, more recent data demonstrated that CO(2) affected the fate of peroxynitrite in biological fluids and significantly reduced peroxynitrite scavenging by polyphenols, raising doubts concerning their antioxidant activity. We found that the oxidation of LDL lipids mediated by peroxynitrite decreased in the presence of bicarbonate, while Trp oxidation and 3-nitroTyr formation increased, suggesting a redirection of peroxynitrite reactivity toward the protein moiety. We therefore evaluated the protective activity of some phenolic antioxidants (quercetin, oleuropein, resveratrol, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, tyrosol, alpha- and gamma-tocopherol, a
 scorbate) on peroxynitrite-mediated oxidation of LDL aromatic residues. Some of these phenols protected LDL Trp from oxidation better than ascorbate or alpha-tocopherol, although protection 
 at 100 microM did not exceed 30-40%. However, the same phenolic antioxidants were more active in inhibiting 3-nitroTyr formation and those with a catechin structure provided significant protection (IC(50%) 40-50 microM). Red wine, a polyphenol-rich beverage, showed a protective effect comparable to that of the most active phenolic antioxidants. Direct EPR studies showed that bicarbonate significantly increased the peroxynitrite-dependent formation of O-semiquinone radicals in red wine, supporting the hypothesis that polyphenols are efficient scavengers of radicals formed by peroxynitrite/CO(2). Ascorbate was a poor inhibitor of peroxynitrite/CO(2)-induced LDL tyrosine nitration, but the simultaneous addition to the most active polyphenols halved their IC(50%). In conclusion, although coop

  During the last decade, the intense study of adult hippocampal neurogenesis has led to several new lines of inquiry in the field of psychiatry. Although it is generally believed that adult mammalian neurogenesis is restricted to the hippocampus and olfactory bulb, a growing number of studies have described new neurons in the adult neocortex in both rodents and nonhuman primates. Interestingly, all of the new neurons observed in these studies have features of interneurons rather than pyramidal cells, the largest neuronal population of the neocortex. In this review, we discuss features of these interneurons that may explain why cortical neurogenesis has been so difficult to detect. In addition, these features suggest ways that production of even a small numbers of new neurons in the adult 
 cortex could make a significant impact on neocortical function.

  During aging, reductions in hippocampal neurogenesis are associated with memory decline indicating a causal relationship. Indeed, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), a major activator of the extracellular receptor kinase pathway that is central in learning and memory processes, is also a key modulator of hippocampal neurogenesis. Previously, we showed that age-related declines in spatial memory tasks can be improved by antioxidant-rich diets containing blueberries. In this study, to begin to understand the mechanisms responsible for the beneficial effects of blueberries, we assessed changes in hippocampal plasticity parameters such as hippocampal neurogenesis, extracellular receptor kinase activation, and IGF-1 and IGF-1R levels in blueberry-supplemented aged animals. Our results show 
 that all these parameters of hippocampal neuronal plasticity are increased in supplemented animals and aspects such as proliferation, extracellular receptor kinase activation and IGF-1 and I
 GF-1R levels correlate with improvements in spatial memory. Therefore, cognitive improvements afforded by polyphenolic-rich fruits such as blueberries appear, in part, to be mediated by their effects on hippocampal plasticity.

  Aim:  While the underlying therapeutic mechanisms of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment for depression remain unclear, recent animal studies have suggested that hippocampal neurogenesis might be required for the effects of antidepressant treatments including antidepressant drugs and electroconvulsive therapy. The aim of this study was to examine chronic rTMS effects on hippocampal neurogenesis in rats. Methods:  Using a 70-mm figure-of-eight coil, the stimulating parameters were set to 25 Hz and 70% of the rTMS device's maximum power. For 14 consecutive days, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) and 1000 pulses of rTMS were administered daily. Cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus was examined with immunohistochemistry. Results:  In the rTMS-treated group, BrdU-positive 
 cells were significantly increased in the dentate gyrus. Conclusion:  Our results suggest that hippocampal neurogenesis might be involved in the antidepressant effects of chronic rTMS.

I agree with the need to recognize the cultural, social and
ritualistic aspects of building an activist community of like-minded
persons. However, I disagree that this should be connected to any
religion. I see cryonics as part of a move to make physical the dreams
of humanity that until recently have been impossible and therefore
have been expressed through spiritual or religious aspirations. A
material understanding of the world is supplanting the natural but
primitive religious understanding.

Support communities are already available: Meetup has the following
totals for Atheists:

Groups 512 	
Members 80,505 	
Interested 19,699 	
Cities 330 	
Countries 9

My suggestion is to check in with your local Atheist Meetup group, and
let us know how many people are already thinking in terms of
transhumanism in general, and cryonics in particular. I am only just
making contact with my own groups - there are 4 or 5
transhuman-interested individuals, none aware of the international
movements as such, and none connected to cryonics... yet.
