Final date: Tuesday, Jun 30, 2020 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Applications will continue to be accepted until this date, but those received after the review date will only be considered if the position has not yet been filled. DESCRIPTION The Department of Global Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2020. The Department is looking for individuals with particular emphasis in the area of Global Migration and Forced Displacement. The UCSB Global Studies Department accepts candidates with backgrounds in the social sciences, humanities, or interdisciplinary fields. We seek a candidate who brings historical and theoretical complexity to understandings of forced displacement, including the interrogation of the binary between forced and economic migration. We are interested in scholars who highlight migration not as an independent process but rather one caused and/or intensified by the broader dynamics of global displacement and dispossession, and that are met by increasing forms of state control. We invite world-regional and transregional approaches to migration flows structured by global processes and patterns (such as poverty, labor precarity, inequality, environmental destruction, extractivism, extralegal violence, war, state failure and illicit economies). Topics of interest might include globalized drivers of displacement; the impact of forced displacement on gendered, racial/ethnic, and intergenerational power structures; state and community responses to shifting dynamics of migration; global governance and challenges to the international refugee regime; and how responses to migration are changing dynamics of globalization. Responsibilities of faculty members generally include the development of an actively funded research program of the highest quality, teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels, recruitment, supervision, and mentorship of graduate students, and participation in university service and professional activities. Applicants must have completed all requirements for a PhD (or equivalent) except the dissertation in a related field at the time of application, with the PhD conferred by the anticipated appointment start date. A demonstrated record of excellence in research, and a record of (or potential for) outstanding teaching are desired. Preferred candidates should include evidence of at least five years of study in the area of Global Migration and Forced Displacement, and a publication record that employs an interdisciplinary framework. Successful candidates will have a record of collaborative research, and will be able to leverage synergies within the Department of Global Studies and the Division. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position. Applications should be submitted electronically, and must include: =E2=80=A2 Cover letter (detailing your research interests, teaching philoso= phy and experience, and professional activities) =E2=80=A2 Curriculum vitae =E2=80=A2 Writing sample (25-30 page maximum) =E2=80=A2 Two sample syllabi (as one merged PDF) =E2=80=A2 Statement of Contributions to Diversity (optional) =E2=80=A2 Applicants will need to arrange for 3 references to submit letter= s of recommendation on their behalf via the recruitment website =E2=80=A2 Other optional documents can include: Statement of Research or St= atement of Teaching We strongly encourage applicants to submit an optional Statement of Contributions to Diversity.
