We are organizing for the American Historical Association Conference
in Washington DC, Jan. 2-5. Our panel, "Contested Spaces: Gender and
the Geography of Early American Cinema" will examine issues of gender
and the moving pictures in regard to the built environment, place,
architecture, and representational space. Currently, we are looking
for a third panelist.

The panel will be chaired by Hilary Hallett, Ph.D. (Columbia
University). One of the papers examines the role of traveling black
women film exhibitors in making claims to urban space, 1900-1910.
Another panelist will consider the relationship between New York City,
entertainment spaces and performances, and the fight for woman's
suffrage from 1910-1917. Kathy Peiss will comment on the papers.

If you are interested in joining the panel, please send a 250 word
abstract and CV to [email protected].
