MOVING ON: South Asian Screen Cultures in a Broader Frame

DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS: Wednesday 26th March
Indian Cinema has just celebrated the centenary of the release of =
Dadasaheb Phalke=E2=80=99s Raja Harishchandra. It is now time to assess =
the ever expanding film archive and its new and rapidly proliferating =
manifestations. Moving on from cinema to a wider notion of screen =
cultures signals a paradigmatic shift in which the lines between film, =
media, art and photography appear increasingly blurred. This poses a =
challenge to disciplines that have traditionally been geared towards =
asking medium-specific questions. While the pressure to periodize has =
led to easy formulations that separate the old from the new, it is =
imperative that we move away from such convenient binaries. This =
interdisciplinary conference seeks to explore complex and nuanced screen =
archaeologies in which the past, the present and the future come =
together to pose new questions for South Asian Screen Studies in the =
21st Century.
We are particularly interested in the processes of dispersal, =
fragmentation and regeneration. These could pertain to screen =
technologies, film form, media artefacts, extra-filmic ephemera, sound =
objects, personnel, formal and informal markets, and the multilayered =
routes of screen travel. It is our hope that this conference can offer a =
venue to think about alternative genealogies, archaeologies, and =
interconnected archives. =E2=80=98Moving on=E2=80=99 is fuelled by a =
desire to consider the moving image in the broadest context of region =
and time span.
While centred on South Asia, our focus is not limited to screen objects =
produced in/by/for South Asians. Rather we hope also to engage with =
transnational and transcultural journeys, institutions and cultural =
forms. We especially invite ongoing research on encounters between South =
Asian screen cultures and Southeast Asia via the circulation of objects, =
market networks and migration.  We also wish to bring documentary, =
experimental, and artists=E2=80=99 film and video into the debate, =
examining their role in opening up new spaces, networks and audiences.
We invite proposals from researchers and practitioners of South Asian =
screen cultures, along with those in related fields. Papers may address, =
though need not be restricted to, the following themes:

           =E2=81=83          Old and new exhibition practices
           =E2=81=83          Technological imaginations

           =E2=81=83          The changing landscape of the Experimental

DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS: Wednesday 26th March.
The deadline for abstracts is Wednesday 26th March.  Successful =
applicants will be notified by Wednesday 16th April. Abstracts should =
not be more than 300 words long. They must include the title of the =
conference, presenter=E2=80=99s name, affiliation, email and postal =
address, together with the title of the paper. Please ensure when saving =

PROGRAMME AND REGISTRATION
Details of the programme and registration fee will be announced in =
mid-March. We will attempt to keep the fee as affordable and inclusive =
as possible, although we will need to cover basic costs of refreshments =
and catering.  Registration will open in April.
