I didn't know it was a DDoS... which based on the note below must be from 
Lars' blog.  I knew the stuff on the gmane site.  But I knew about the 
litigation threats from previous threads, and the DDoS doesn't surprise 
me.  These days it's a fact of life for any site with a profile high 
enough to get on the bad guys' radar -- basically electronic piracy, hold 
the site's connectivity for ransom.  And gmane was big enough to get on 
the radar.

Hmm... I thought the volunteers took that over too, and setup the mail 
and nntp stuff on a "temporary" basis until they could get their fancy 
database setup handling it... only that never happened.

But your version makes more sense, as that explains why Lars would 
suddenly show up here again, able to actually do anything more than the 
rest of us.  (I thought they must have given him admin rights on the 
still nntp/mail stuff, out of respect, and he was just using that, but 
then I did the traces and found that it was in still in Norway, and that 
confused me as I thought the company that took over was elsewhere.  I 
knew some of the information I had didn't fit what I thought I knew, but 
I didn't yet have a viable replacement until you both corrected my 
erroneous conclusions and filled in some missing bits.)

That's actually one of the nice things about nntp. =:^)

And since my name was proposed to take over gmane, let me note that I 
know it's available... and haven't taken it and run with it!

Don't get me wrong, I'd be fine helping out, and do try to do just that 
here, as best I can as just another user.  But I'm not a coder in ordered 
to responsibly keep up with things, nor do I have the other resources 
available to me to responsibly host gmane.  Further, I'm in the US, where 
some of those legal threats that for the most part just bounce off for 
people located in Norway, could potentially do real damage.

So help out I'm willing to do, but run a gmane or gmane substitute 
service myself... Asjo' description "hilarious"... is quite apt!  Not 
going to happen!  If I /did/ actually have the resources to do it, I'd 
certainly not be opposed to trying, but the fact is I don't... in more 
than one resource area too.
