Then you must have installed them somewhere else. Or did something else

The gettext manual (not man page) is suspiciously missing from the list:
http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/gettext.html (first Google
hit for "gettext manual"). It's also the same manual that all the
gettext man pages point you to:

               The full documentation for xgettext is maintained as a
        Texinfo
               manual.  If the info and xgettext programs are properly
               installed at your site, the command

               should give you access to the complete manual.

Strictly speaking, it only says that _() is "standard", not that
