The newest version in Debian is 17.0, and the maintainer doesn't seem
interested in the package any more - at least if you judge only from the
bug page.

I was thinking about doing an NMU for this. But since then I have
discovered a more severe issue of this package:

http://bugs.debian.org/292322

The license situation is unclear, and the package might be non-free.

Hm, considering this, I think I should do the NMU anyway. It does break
auctex (and probably other packages) *now*, but a removal due to a bad
license might take time; it will take even more time if the author
promises to clear up the license situation.
