I did not read yet the latex-preview manual entirely, just those parts of I which I thought I should have read, and I wasn't aware that preview-latex was able to do that kind of 'reverse-engineering' on PDF. Thanks to you now I know! Your first answer just made me imagine this unusual way. And since I did not accept this my answers were based on DVI. At least I could have read a bit in the meantime ...
