Sorry, this wasn't my assumption and this (still) isn't what I think! I 
did not read yet the latex-preview manual entirely, just those parts of 
I which I thought I should have read, and I wasn't aware that 
preview-latex was able to do that kind of 'reverse-engineering' on PDF. 
Thanks to you now I know! Your first answer just made me imagine this 
unusual way. And since I did not accept this my answers were based on 
DVI. At least I could have read a bit in the meantime ...

When exactly this conversion is still a bit unreliable why isn't 
configure checking for the right gs and warning about an unusable 
software/recommending usable versions and catching this with not 
obeying the rule to use PDF output?
