MI was never my issue.

Imagine that West bid an "uncomfortable" 1 NT. Hesitation. Thinking. Not looking happy. They were an experienced partnership, but I can pick that up from anyone.

Now 2D becomes a much better bid.

Suppose West bids a comfortable 1 NT. Now passing becomes a better bid. And no one will be the wiser on the unintentional use of UI.

And if we are not going to take action in this situation, I don't know when we are ever going to take action.

And it's hard to imagine how the 1NT bid could have been anything BUT uncomfortable. If he can bid 1NT with trump support without thinking, he's done it before. And then the 2D bid becomes more attractive.

There was damage from the 2D bid, because 1NT goes down -- as you might expect, there is no good score for playing 1NT with a 5-4 trump fit.

Yes, except he has 5 HCP and is vulnerable. I would; the person I consulted with said not. Andd there is a general issue were when two bids fit together.

They are good players who play together all the time.

No, both players claimed they were making good bids.

The 2D bidder did not like playing 1NT with a singleton. [singleton ace]. He said he was willing to play a 3-3 diamond fit, but with 3 diamonds and 2 hearts, he felt strongly his partner would bid 2 hearts. He was willing to play a 6-1 club fit on the 3 level.

Or, in my words, he thought 2 Diamonds was a good bid. His explanation of why it was a good bid improved over time.

The player who bid 1NT said he was not strong enough to bid 2 hearts, having only 5 HCP. I still do not see how anything could assess the hand that way.
