Thanks Steve. What you are close to saying is that when a reasonably good player makes a strange bid that works, we have really good reason to think there was probably some infraction. Right? And we can't do anything (except investigate).

The player who opens 7NT on a hand where no one would even think of doing that. And it looks like a horrible bid. But partner puts down the right cards to make it work. (1)

The player who describes his partner's bid as forcing (and hence unlimited), yet decides to pass and catches his partner a point short and the standard contract going down one. (2)



(1)My pointless investigation revealed that the hand was discussed, probably loudly, at the previous table.

I didn't bother investigating, I know the answer. He had a bad feeling about the hand, he didn't like it for reasons that cannot make sense, he took a risk, he can bid what he wants. Been there. The player making the complaint knew I couldn't do anything.
