It would be nice to have this sort of functionality to easily use the GPU for general purpose computations (take a look at www.gpgpu.org ), i.e. "abusing" the graphic processor as a stream architecture for handling data parallel tasks. Such an interface would also be great to cleanly separate the context used for rendering graphics to screen and the context which uses the GPU as sort of an coprocessor. ... though this might currently be uninteresting for games...
