To be fair there is a huge difference between hobbyist open source and
professional. I'm a professional Linux driver developer (but I don't
do graphics). I get paid and products I've worked on sell for $99 to
$160000 each (wide range). Set-top box makers, as UIs become more
elaborate, certainly have an interest in accessing the graphics
acceleration that is now becoming very affordable. We'll likely see a
few embedded products out next year that are using Linux/OpenGL ES on
an ARM/Cortex and PowerVR.

There is also a huge difference between those using OpenGL for UIs
(like on settop boxes like I mentioned) and simple games (like
cellphones). And those using it for industrial purposes like
simulation and modeling. These little PowerVR chips might not be that
impressive compared to what you can do on a workstation or game
console. But being able to sell a device for profit under $100 that
can do some shaders at HD resolution is pretty impressive to me.
