Joe,
Closed party states mean that only Democrats can vote for Democrats. It
does NOT mean that the party can tell a voter that he cannot vote, just
that he must be a Democrat. And they cannot prevent anyone from
registering to vote for whatever party they choose, or voting in that
primary.
If you're picking what might be the next President of the United States,
I would hope that the same laws that apply to voting in a general
election would also apply to the primary. And there's a HUGE difference
between picking the next Presidential candidate and picking the head of
the local Diplomacy hobby. I suspect if the parties put in literacy
tests before allowing votes, you'd hear more of an outcry, don't you
think?
As for how the Democrats run their party, hey, you're right, it's their
business. They got themselves into this mess with a half-assed and
corrupt primary system, and now they have to figure their own way out.
Either they put Hillary on the VP ticket or piss off a bunch of her
voters. Either way, they're giving McCain a decent shot at winning the
Presidency, when he really shouldn't have a chance in hell.
