How can you do that? How do you know his intent except by examining his
orders? What your house rule is doing is giving players advance notice of
the intent you will impute to them based on a given order. Your particular
house rule essentially says, "If you incorrectly designate a unit, I will
assume that you knew what your were doing and I will invalidate the order."
(Subtext: "So proofread your orders!")
The player can unambiguously communicate his intention simply by writing a
facially correct order. You gave them advance notice of what you would do,
so I think you need to stick to your guns. Anything else is unfair to the
other players.
It is a different issue entirely whether or not you are happy with how your
own house rule imputes intent. It sounds to me as though you are having
second thoughts. If so, you can always announce to the players that you are
changing the house rule and that you will assume that players always intend
correct unit designations, so for all practical purposes you will ignore
unit type in order sets. But that change, if you decide to make it, should
only take effect AFTER the current adjudication.
Meanwhile, you already did your best to ferret out his intent, and if you
reached a different conclusion than he did, that's his risk. I bet he'll
proofread next time!
