So if you just want to fly, you don't need to build your own scenery. If you have your own data, or want to do something differently, or just like to play with the stuff, then please, forge ahead. I believe nurbs++ has some problems compiling with gcc-3.4.x, but compiles well with earlier versions of gcc. The current flightgear scenery is built from SRTM data (which is HGT format).
