About editing championships

Hi, I love Torcs ever since 1.2.something and would love to know how I
could edit the races in Championship mode, the length of them, the points
system and the number of drivers to select to compete in the championship.
I know it has something to do with the .xml files, but I am not certain if
I have to recompile the game to run the updated versions of them. I feel
this is the solution, but I have no idea how to do it, neither in Linux nor
in Windows. I would be grateful if someone could answer me and give me a
way to solve this problem (not a problem, really) that I have wanted to
solve since I was like, 8 years old.
