If I understand, the problem is in detecting the ship on the filed with 
canal locks and not allowing to enter more ships,  isn't it? Or there is 
problem with changing the graphics (with the animation) too?

Because maybe there could be more ships at once (normaly the ships in TTD go 
thru the other on open water).

And maybe there is only problem with the doors. If you make graphics of 
canal lock with high walls etc., so that the water is barely visible, you 
will be able to let ship sloping up normaly as a car or train. Yes, I know, 
in real world, ships are not moving forward while they are in canal locks 
and the level of water is changing, but it would look better then now.
