I always feel uncomfortable sending template letters. If I were on the
receiving end, they'd all end up in the round file on the floor, on the
basis that is looks like someone's stirring up people to complain when they
would not otherwise have done so. I much prefer to write my own letter
expressing my own opinions. I emailed the BBC about DOGs (Digital Onscreen
Graphics, I think) complaining that the drama productions on BBC Four were
being spoiled by their obtrusive logo. I CC:d the Campaign for Logo-Free TV,
and the organiser was quite upset that I had strayed from the party line by
suggesting that minimising the impact of these logos would be an
improvement. Well, that's tough, I have my own opinions, and I think the
arguement is helped by it being evident that there is more to the issue than
a bunch of sheep all bleating the same.

A template message, however, is better than nothing, and if it gets people
to write that otherwise would not have done, then that's fine.

If you really care about the issue, though, then nothing beats a
hand-written letter sent through the post. Three out of the four letters
that I have written to my MP were hand-written, and those were the ones I
got real responses to. In one case I got a response from e-minister Patricia
Hewett's office as well.
