[ACPI-sppt] 2.4.21 + acpi: hwclock randomly hangs system boot?

Hello list,

See subject. I have a 2.4.21 kernel patched with the latest acpi patch. When 
booting Linux it happens every so often that the system stops booting when 
running the hwclockfirst.sh script. 

Having echoed just about every line in the script so I can find the line 
number where the script stops and seeing the system boot process hang on 
every line with 'hwclock' I can only conclude that somehow it's causing the 
system to hang. The system does not continue booting after waiting a long 
time (long being 5 minutes).

This only happens with kernels patched with the acpi patch. It also happens 
completely at random. Usually when it happens once and I reboot it will 
happen again a few times, then finally bootup will work fine.

I have all the acpi modules loaded at boot, with no odd errors. However I do 
get a few messages saying that a device cannot be given a valid IRQ so it's 
given 255 or 0.

Sony Vaio PCG-U101
Processor: Intel Mobile Celeron 600A
Chipset: Intel 855PM
Bios: Phoenix version R0041G0
PCMCIA: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c475
Firewire: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c475

IRQ 9 is heavily used by a great may of devices: usb, acpi, firewire, 
ethernet, agp.
