I hadn't heard about trip points until I'd read that article. In fact it
hadn't even occurred to me that such a thing might exist. Of course it
makes sense now, but it does take some of the magic out of running a
computer. ;)

I think Bruno's assesment that the fan isn't actually controlled by ACPI
at the moment makes the most sense. Everything else seems to be in place.
(Except for the missing active line in the trip point file.)
The fact that Windows rarely turns on the fan AND the trip points are quite
high leads me to believe my fan *can* be controlled by ACPI, it just isn't 
right now.
