I fought through this and realized that my debian cd that I can
boot from was written to with an older cdrw drive that is no longer on
my Gentoo/athlon box.  All other CDs I was trying to boot from were 
written by
my fancy new DVD drive.  So, no matter how slow I was trying to have
it write none of them were readable by the old ss20.

I unpacked the above iso, scp'ed that tree over to the ss20, unpacked the
livecd loop image, etc. and can now boot UP both gentoo and vanilla kernels
from the ss20 hard drive.

The SMP kernels hang on my Ross hypersparc cpus.  However this
is a simple rescue cd with no dev tools, so cannot use it to bootstrap
another environment.  It did give me a clue though how I could dup this
process with another (aurora, deb) install cd that is currently not
working because of the broken CD setup.

(that or put my old HP CD scsi drive back into my gentoo box and
reburn some CDs)
