Finally got it. After removing the old Mandrake drivers in order to get wlan0 to register, I had to add MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes to the wlan0 script to get the network to initialize. I added the line and did a service network restart, but it timed out; so I did a complete restart, and it initialized the wlan0 connection on startup.
