This sounds more like a sane backend problem that an issue with the hpoj =
or
hplip packages

check /etc/sane.d/dll.conf on a line "hp" set in it. Depending on your di=
stro
this may be disabled by default.

If that is the case, add the line or uncomment it and startup hpoj/hplip =
device
and run the following command to see if it appears.
scanimage -L
