since the connection seems to have failed very early with the "Training 
failed" error, this could explain why many fields are still at 0 or 
their default values.

Assuming you are trying to connect to another modem, you could try to 
connect to a different modem to see if there is a difference. 
Alternatively, you could also try each of the following init. strings:

AT &F W1 +ER=1; +DR=1; +MS=V90,1
AT &F W1 +ER=1; +DR=1; +MS=V34,0

It is possible that one of them will solve the problem.
