  Wed, Aug 24th 2005 16:25

Database :: Front-Ends
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: Alexandria is a GNOME application to help manage a book collection.
It retrieves book information (including cover pictures) from several
online libraries, allows you to search for a book (either by EAN/ISBN,
title, authors, or keyword), can import and export data into ONIX,
Tellico, and EAN/ISBN-list formats, generates Web pages from your
libraries, allows marking your books as loaned, saves data using the YAML
format, features an HIG-compliant user interface, shows books in different
views that can be filtered or sorted, and handles book rating and notes.

Changes: The two major points of this release are full Z39.50 support and
a complete Docbook manual (with integration with the GNOME help system).
Some minor enhancements like auto-completion and American UPC support are
also available, as well as a long list of bugfixes.

About: This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet
(AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block
devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as
local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).

Changes: The Makefile now determines the module installation directory in
a way that is more compatible with current major distributions. The
aoetools-6 package was bundled with the driver.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers

About: CGIProxy is a Perl CGI script that acts as an Internet proxy.
Through it, you can retrieve resources that may be inaccessible from your
own machine. The user is kept as anonymous as possible from any servers.
HTTP and FTP are supported, and optionally SSL. Common uses include
VPN-like setups, anonymous proxies, personal proxies, and others. Options
include text-only browsing (to save bandwidth), selective cookie and
script removal, simple ad filtering, access restriction by server, encoded
target URLs and cookies, configuration by end user, and much more
(currently about 50 config options). An online demo is available.

Changes: This is primarily a bugfix release. In short, more pages behave
correctly through CGIProxy. Support for the Accept-Language: HTTP header
was added, so servers can correctly deliver pages in the desired (human)
language.

  by Oskar Liljeblad (http://freshmeat.net/users/osk/)
  Wed, Aug 24th 2005 11:51

System
System :: Archiving

About: The file renaming utilities (renameutils for short) are a set of
programs designed to make renaming of files faster and less cumbersome.
qmv ("quick move") allows file names to be edited in a text editor. The
names of all files in a directory are written to a text file, which is
then edited by the user. The text file is read and parsed, and the changes
are applied to the files. qcp copies files instead of renaming them. imv
("interactive move"), is trivial but useful when you are too lazy to type
(or even complete) the name of the file to rename twice. It allows a file
name to be edited in the terminal using the GNU Readline library.
Similarly, icp copies files instead of renaming them.

[063] - Spring IDE for Eclipse 1.2.3
  by Torsten Juergeleit (http://freshmeat.net/users/tjuerge/)
  Wed, Aug 24th 2005 16:27

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)

About: Spring IDE for Eclipse provides plugins for the Eclipse platform to
ease working with Bean Factory configuration files for the Spring
Framework. It contains a Spring project nature (with an incremental
builder for validating Spring bean config files), an image decorator
(which decorates Spring projects and all Spring bean config files), a
Spring view (which allows one to browse Spring projects and their Spring
bean config files, including bean properties), and an editor showing a
graph from the beans of a single config file or a set of config files.

Changes: This version fixes a few bugs (mainly with BeansConfigValidator)
and adds one enhancement (a preview version of the upcoming Spring beans
config XML editor).

[065] - streamripper 1.61.11
  by Greg Sharp (http://freshmeat.net/users/gregsharp/)
  Wed, Aug 24th 2005 21:18

Communications :: File Sharing
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Capture/Recording
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: Streamripper records shoutcast-compatible streams. For shoutcast
style streams it finds the "meta data" or track separation data, and uses
that as a marker for where the track should be separated. The MP3 data is
decoded and scanned for a silent point, which is where tracks will be
created.

Changes: Metadata restriction rules are now implemented, which allow a
user to specify which files to save and which to discard using regular
expressions. The user can now assert greater control over the output
filenames by using a pattern substitution string. Automatic sequence
numbering of output files was improved to restart from the highest number
in the output directory by default. Finally, a new option for overwriting
existing files only when the new file is larger was added.

[071] - Visopsys 0.57
  by Andy McLaughlin (http://freshmeat.net/users/andymcl/)
  Wed, Aug 24th 2005 03:20

System :: Operating System Kernels

About: Visopsys is an alternative operating system for PC compatible
computers. Under development since late 1997, this system is small, fast,
and open source. It features a simple but attractive interface, real
preemptive multitasking, and virtual memory. Though it attempts to be
compatible in a number of ways, Visopsys is not a clone of any other
operating system. You can demo the distribution from a "live" CD or floppy
disk.

Changes: This is a maintenance and bugfix release. There are various GUI
touch-ups. The Disk Manager now updates disk geometry information in FAT
partitions after disk copy operations. The window "list" component has
been reimplemented. A number of kernel improvements have been back-ported
from the 0.6 development branch.

Rational Rose support, Microsoft Visio integration, and report and
HTML/PDF documentation generators.

Changes: A problem in which an old diagram was renamed when reassociating
an overview diagram shape was fixed. A problem in which a component object
name did not refresh in a diagram after being assigned a base classifier
was fixed. A problem in which drag and drop of models in the tree did not
fire a "project modified" event was fixed. A problem with the wrong items
being listed in the recent project list was fixed. The dialog for asking
whether to recover a project was fixed so that it is not behind the splash
screen. Failure to handle multiplicity bounds in teamwork server and

  by Michel Rodriguez (http://freshmeat.net/users/michelrodriguez/)
  Wed, Aug 24th 2005 16:39

Software Development :: Libraries :: Perl Modules
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XML::Twig is an XML transformation module. It can be used to
process huge documents while still being in tree mode; is not bound by DOM
or SAX, so it is very Perlish and offers a very comprehensive set of
methods; is simple to use; and DWIMs as much as possible. What it doesn't
offer: full SAX support (it can export SAX, but only reads XML); full
XPath support (unless you use XML::Twig::XPath); nor DOM support. It is
also a big module, and with over 500 methods available it can be a bit
overwhelming. A good starting point is the online tutorial.

and what's-this-style context help.

Changes: This release contains generic components from the XNap project
that were considered useful. The code has been tested and is already used
by the JHylaFAX project. A few things, like shortcut handling, drag and
drop support, are still under consideration and may be added in future
releases.
