by AT Consultancy (http://freshmeat.net/users/atconsultancy/)
Mon, Oct 3rd 2005 11:00
About: ATMission is a Linux live CD distribution that lets you change any
file on the CD. Unlike other live CDs where you can only change a
carefully selected set of files placed on a ramdisk, it is based on the
cowloop module and allows you to modify any file on the CD. You can even
install additional RPMs and start programs at boot time. Changes can be
saved in a file on the hard drive or a USB stick.
Changes: Based on the Fedora Core 4 release with Linux kernel 2.6.11. With
the release of the cowloop 2.16 driver, cowfiles can now be placed on a
NTFS partition. All packages are updated. It's possible to copy the ROOTFS
file to the hard disk, which increases performance. Note that with Cowloop
it is possible to create snapshots of snapshots.

Mon, Oct 3rd 2005 00:59
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players
About: BMP is an audio player that tries to maintain a stable audio
playback core with a powerful, yet easy-to-use remote API using DBus,
while also providing a skinned, yet easy and understandable user interface
with the core GUI.
Changes: The internal playlist handling system was rewritten for most
parts. This facilitates playlist manipulation through DBus and makes the
application work faster, especially when adding files trough file
selectors, the library dialog, or DnD. Memory leaks were fixed, as well as
a lot of core code and usability bugs. Fixes in the graphics engine were
made. The "Browse" mode in the media library dialog has been implemented.
Because of the current implementation of the media database, initial
building of the browse tree is very slow. CD playback and Internet stream
handling were improved.

by Jeff Perkins (http://freshmeat.net/users/jhpnez/)
Mon, Oct 3rd 2005 11:28
Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property (such as "x=2*y+5" or
"this.next.prev = this" or "myarray is sorted by <") that holds at a
certain point or points in a program. Invariants are often seen in assert
statements, documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be
useful in program understanding and a host of other applications. Daikon
runs a program, observes the values that the program computes, and then
reports properties that were true over the observed executions. It can
detect properties in Java, C, C++, Perl, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet
files, and in other data sources.
Changes: Several bugfixes and minor enhancements have been made to the
Mangel-Wurzel, Kvasir, and Chicory front ends. The older front ends dfec
and dfej have been removed from the distribution.

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
About: Elektra provides a universal and secure framework to store
configuration parameters in a hierarchical key-value pair mechanism,
instead of each program using its own text configuration files. This
allows any program to read and save its configuration with a consistent
API, and allows them to be aware of other applications' configurations,
permitting easy application integration. While architecturally similar to
other OS registries, Elektra does not have most of the problems found in
those implementations.
Changes: Some fixes were made to complete the renaming from libkdb.so to
libelektra.so. A bug in the filesys backend regarding reuse of folder key
struct was removed. Some Makefiles were changed to handle the new
directories in the source.

by Albert Chu (http://freshmeat.net/users/chu11/)
Mon, Oct 3rd 2005 17:19
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Systems Administration
About: Genders is a static cluster configuration database used for cluster
configuration management. It is used by a variety of tools and scripts for
management of large clusters. The genders database is accessed by every
node in a cluster, either through a networked file system or by
replicating the database on every node of the cluster. The database
describes the layout and configuration of the cluster so that tools and
scripts can sense the variations of cluster nodes. By abstracting this
information into a plain text file, it becomes possible to change the
configuration of a cluster by modifying only one file.

by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
Mon, Oct 3rd 2005 12:10
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion
Text Processing
About: Ocrad is the GNU OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program,
implemented as a filter and based on a feature extraction method. It reads
a bitmap image in PBM format and produces text in byte (8-bit) or UTF-8
formats. It also includes a layout analyzer that is able to separate the
columns or blocks of text normally found on printed pages. Ocrad can be
used as a stand-alone console application, or as a backend to other
programs.
Changes: The algorithm for space detection is now more scale-independent
(uses rational numbers instead of integers). Recognition of numbers has

Mon, Oct 3rd 2005 17:06
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
System :: Archiving
About: GoldenPod is a podcast client (or podcast aggregator, or
podcatcher) written in Perl. It supports reading configuration files in
~/.goldenpod/ and then saving the podcasts to the directory defined there.
It also supports just getting thrown into a directory where BashPodder used
to be and replacing it automagically, or having its config files in the
same directory as itself and then just being run from a random location
and detecting and performing a chdir correctly.
Changes: This release adds a --rmold function that allows you to delete N
old podcasts (N is 4 or the number supplied to --files). --dry-run has
been renamed to --no-download, and a new --dry-run option has been added
that allows you to see what --rmold/--copy would delete/copy. A --stats
option has been added that allows you to see some simple documentation
concerning the downloaded podcasts. /etc/goldenpod.conf has been renamed

partitions to extract all information needed (registry entries, message
templates, and log files) to convert the logs to a human-readable format.
Changes: This version constitutes a major update in the package.
Highlights included an updated .evt parsing algorithm that now includes
header and cursor record parsing, large speedups in grokevt-builddb by
more intelligent use of reglookup, and the addition of dynamic control set
discovery in grokevt-builddb. This update requires an upgrade of RegLookup

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: HTML Forms generation and validation is a PHP class that generates
HTML forms supporting keyboard navigation, many built-in validation types
on server and client sides, prevents security attacks by discarding
spoofed values, has multiple submit protection, outputs HTML for fields
displayed as fully accessible or in read-only mode, has field value
filtering based on regular expressions, and has automatic capitalization
of field text. It can be extended with custom input control plug-in
classes. Calendar date, CAPTCHA, and linked select plug-in controls are
available. The form output can be defined with templates using HTML with
embedded PHP or the Smarty template engine.
Changes: Support for handling all types of input events besides ONCHANGE
and ONCLICK was added. Linked select custom inputs now support multiple
selected options. Custom inputs are now allowed to implement the
ValidateAsSet validation type.

Mon, Oct 3rd 2005 11:32
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: MultiTail lets you view one or multiple files like the original
tail program. The difference is that it creates multiple windows on your
console (with ncurses). Merging of 2 or more log files is possible. It can
also use colors while displaying the log files (through regular
expressions) for faster recognition of what is important. It can also
filter lines (again with regular expressions). It has interactive menus
for editing given regular expressions and deleting and adding windows. One
can also have windows with the output of shell scripts and other software.
When viewing the output of external software, MultiTail can mimic the
functionality of tools like 'watch'.
Changes: SIGHUP now restarts the tail-processes. One can now define in the
configuration file what program to use for tail (for example when one uses
turbotail). One can now set each log file to one color (useful when
merging multiple log files). One can have the file sizes in the status
line be abbreviated (to KB/MB/GB). Starting multitail without any inputs
and then adding a program via the menu no longer fails.

is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test
suite, which guarantees that they will be correct for the particular
program version and the user's locale. Executed expressions are recorded
in a history list, from which entries may be copied to the regular
expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex regular
expressions to be developed in pieces. It fully supports UTF-8 Unicode as
long as the underlying program does.
Changes: This releases fixes two bugs in the tool for entering characters
by Unicode codepoint and adds two help popups missing from the palette. It
also provides improved custom character insertion widgets with the ability
to support upper-and-lower case simultaneously on one set of buttons.

[066] - sendmail X X.0.0.Beta3.0
by Claus Assmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/casmx/)
Mon, Oct 3rd 2005 11:35
Communications :: Email :: Mail Transport Agents
About: sendmail X is a modularized message transfer system consisting of
five (or more) persistent processes, four of which are multi-threaded. A
central queue manager controls SMTP servers and SMTP clients to receive
and send email messages, an address resolver provides lookups in various
maps (including DNS) for mail routing, and a main control program starts
the others processes and watches over their execution. The queue manager
organizes the flow of messages through the system and provides measures to
avoid overloading the local or remote systems by implementing a central
control instance. sendmail X is simple to configure using a syntax that is
easy to understand and use. It is intended to be used as a secure and
efficient mail gateway. It does not provide any mail content modification
capabilities such as address masquerading.
Changes: This release fixes the handling of the empty sender address for
protected_recipients. It plugs a memory leak in the address resolver that
has been found using libumem(3LIB) and other memory debuggers.

Mon, Oct 3rd 2005 07:26
Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
About: TCPfork is a userland TCP proxy with advanced load balancing
capabilities. Its core features are the ability to load balance on a
"least connection" basis and the ability to take the machine load into
account ("least load" or "least resource" load balancing). This is
implemented by using the bngagent UDP protocol. It performs "TCP open"
health checks by default and allows the use of external health check
scripts. Starting with TCPfork 2.x a combination of preforking and
multithreading/prethreading is used for connection handling.
Changes: Preforking is now used in combination with
multithreading/prethreading for connection handling. This allows faster
processing and lower memory consumption at many more concurrent
connections.

Software Development :: Libraries
About: WASP (Web Application Structure for PHP5) is a multi-tier web
application framework built on object oriented PHP5. The framework is a
simplified Model-View-Controller architecture. The controller is built by
adding content "Chunks" to "UIModules". The model portion of the framework
wraps PEAR DB_DataObjects in a business object layer. The view portion
currently makes use of PEAR Html_Template_Flexy, but can be easily
reimplemented using different template managers (or none at all).
Changes: Error handling was enhanced with logging and emails. Autoload has
been implemented, removing the necessity of having a require_once call for
each included class. This should dramatically increase performance and
vastly improve the code development experience. This release contains just
about all of the code slated to be included in the final release of the
WASP framework. Bugfixes and some additional utility package function
additions still remain.
