[001] - AcpiTool 0.2.8
  by DLeemans (http://freshmeat.net/users/dleemans/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 23:01

System
System :: Systems Administration

About: AcpiTool is a Linux ACPI client. It's a small command line
application, intended to be a replacement for the apm tool. The primary
target audience are laptop users, since these people are most interested
in things like battery status, thermal status and the ability to suspend
(sleep mode). The program simply accesses the /proc/acpi or /sysfs entries
to get/set acpi values. Hence, a computer running a Linux kernel from the
2.4.x or 2.6.x series with ACPI enabled is needed.

Changes: When the battery is charging, the battery time is now calculated
as the time until the battery is charged. Minor changes were made to the
-e and -v options. Minor code cleanups were made and bogomips were added
to the CPU information.

Internet :: Proxy Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: Ad Censor is a Web proxy which filters out annoying ads by matching
requested URLs with a blacklist and by checking the HTML code for
suspicious tags which the user can define with Perl regex patterns. It can
work in tandem with another HTTP proxy, it has an easy-to-use GUI config
editor, and it can also block cookies.

Changes: A proper installation and a Debian package were provided.

Text Processing :: Filters
Utilities

About: bbe is a sed-like editor for binary files. Instead of reading input
in lines as sed, bbe reads arbitrary blocks from an input stream and
performs byte-related transformations on found blocks. Blocks can be
defined using start/stop strings, stream offset and block length, or a
combination. Basic editing commands include delete, replace,
search/replace, binary operations (and, or, etc.), append, and bcd/ASCII
conversion. For examining the input stream, it contains some grep-like
features like printing the input file name, stream offset, and block
number of found blocks. Block contents can also be printed in different
formats like hex, octal, ASCII, and binary.

Artistic Software
Communications
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Chalupa creates an almost-bare-bones utility for Web comic authors
to upload and manage their strips. Load on popular comics can be reduced
by utilising the built-in caching system, or strips can be served directly
from the database. Comics can be stored in categories, sorted by date or a
specified comic order, published, withdrawn, edited, and pretty much
anything else you would expect from a file handling system. Included is
functionality to build a proto-CMS Web site around the core comic
functionality, with additional user and news functionality pre-packaged.
Security is the main focus, with salted user passwords, a hotlinking
disabler (without modifying your Apache/IIS config) and comic access
levels.

  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 07:54

Communications :: Email
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: CRM114 is a Controllable Regex Mutilator and Smart Filter, designed
for easy creation of filters for things like incoming email redirection,
spam filtering, system logs, or monitoring processes. Filtering rules can
be either hard-coded (such as regexes), soft-coded (calculated at runtime
or read from an external file or process), or learned dynamically by
phrase matching (as in Bayesian filtering, Markovian matching, Winnowing,
or Hyperspatial classification). This makes it possible to create very
accurate filters with very little actual work. Accuracies over 99.9% are
achievable.

Changes: A TRANSLATE statement was added, which allows tr()-like
transformations of strings but with more power, including downward ranges,
repeated ranges, deletion, uniquing, and unique-before-transform. This is
very useful for people working on microspams and non-English spams. The
QUICKREF, FAQ, and Big Book were improved, and documentation was added
with recommendations for Asian languages.

[013] - DenyHosts 1.1.2
  by Phil Schwartz (http://freshmeat.net/users/phil_schwartz/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 23:02

About: DenyHosts is a script intended to help Linux system administrators
thwart ssh server attacks. DenyHosts scans an ssh server log, updates
/etc/hosts.deny after a configurable number of failed attempts from a
rogue host is determined, and alerts the administrator of any suspicious
logins.

Changes: This version fixes a log file offset issue when running in daemon
mode where the first pass of data discovered was processed twice. A
non-daemon mode bug that occurred when running with the --purge flag was
fixed. All values that are converted to seconds in the prefs.py module are
now converted when the denyhosts.cfg file is processed. Previously, these
values were inefficiently converted each time that they were used. Some
internal prefs.py data structures were migrated from tuples to sets for
performance reasons. Handling of illegal values in denyhosts.cfg was
improved.

About: dietsniff is a tiny tool for analyzing traffic on a network. It's
not intended to replace well-known tools like tcpdump or ethereal. It's
intended for the case when a small and especially static sniffer is
required. Accordingly, it's also by far not that powerful, and is also
bound to Linux as a platform.

Changes: Cleanups were made to make the "hack" a serious program.
Optimizations were included along with new features like option reverse
DNS.

[015] - Directory Synchronize 0.9rc1
  by F. Gerbig (http://freshmeat.net/users/fgerbig/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 05:58

Desktop Environment :: Tools
System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Directory Synchronize is a powerful, easy-to-configure tool to
synchronize the contents of one directory with another. It can compare
files by various attributes, such as size or modified-date. It can
synchronize an unlimited number of directories, and has a detailed logging
function.

Changes: The GUI is now locked during synchronization and "quit" waits for
the synchronization of the current file to finish. The progress now
includes the currently processed file or directory and the messages are in
different colors. You can now use date and time wildcards in the path and
name of the destination directory or the log file. A new
"dirsync.gui.systemlookandfeel" property was added. When set to true the
look and feel of the OS is used. A new icon was included for "preview" as
the old icon looked "deactivated" to some people.

[016] - DUMA 2.4.21
  by Hayati Ayguen (http://freshmeat.net/users/hayguen/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 00:54

Software Development :: Debuggers
Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Testing

About: DUMA (Detect Unintended Memory Access) stops your program on the
exact instruction that overruns (or underruns) a malloc() memory buffer.
GDB will then display the source-code line that causes the bug. It works
by using the virtual-memory hardware to create a red-zone at the border of
each buffer: touch that, and your program stops. It can catch formerly
impossible-to-catch overrun bugs. DUMA is a fork of Bruce Perens' Electric
Fence library.

Changes: The C++ 'new' operators now conform more closely to the C++
standard by calling the new_handler() when allocation fails. Minor
bugfixes were made and the TODO was updated and sorted by priority.

[018] - EtherEye Network Host Checker 1.5
  by David Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/dj1471/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 11:06

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: EtherEye is a Web-based network host checking system written in PHP
and standards compliant HTML. You simply provide it with a list of IP
addresses or domain names via the configuration interface, and it will
ping them on request and output the results as HTML. You can also access
the results via RSS feed for easier monitoring or to integrate into a Web
site.

Changes: This release adds support for caching the ping results so that it
doesn't have to ping your hosts every time it is accessed. There is also a
new configuration option to set the ping timeout, to reduce the amount of
time ping spends waiting for a response from unreachable hosts. In
addition, displayed text has been abstracted from the source files to make
translating the interface into other languages very easy. There have also
been a lot of changes made behind the scenes to clean up the code and make
things more efficient.

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: The GOBLIN project consists of a C++ class library for a large
series of graph optimization problems, GOSH, an extension of the Tcl/Tk
scripting language to graph objects, and GOBLET, a graphical user
interface to the library functions. GOBLET includes a graph editor and
some graph layout methods.

Changes: Two fundamental algorithms for orthogonal graph drawings were
added: 1-bent Kandinski drawings for general graph objects, and 2-bent
drawings with small nodes for 2-connected graphs with maximum node degree
4 or less. The latter method gives plane drawings when the input graph is
planar.

Text Processing
Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: ISCII Utilities is two programs for analyzing text files encoded
according to the Indian Script Code for Information Interchange (ISCII),
the Indian national standard. IsciiName identifies each code, printing the
byte offset, the code in hex, and an explanation of the meaning of the
code. ATR codes for writing system transition and display mode are
interpreted. CountIsciiChars counts the codes in an ISCII file and
classifies them according to their type and function. The original purpose
was computing accurate letter counts for reading studies, but this
information is also useful when processing ISCII-encoded text.

Changes: The -h flag to CountIsciiChars now provides explanations useful
to those unfamiliar with the ISCII encoding or with Indian writing
systems. The README provides URLS for the standard.

[039] - LogiLogi.org Make 0.3.0
  by Wybo Wiersma (http://freshmeat.net/users/wybow/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 10:53

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: LogiLogi.org Make is yet another make replacement, but one that
allows you to create your makefile in C++. A header and footer are added
to it, and it's then compiled using your C++ compiler. Afther that it's
run, and that's the point where your other sources are being compiled.
Thanks to the lakeUsr extension library (which is included), many
(possibly complex) compile commands can be given with one simple function
call. The lakeUsr library features compilation of source trees,
compilation of static libraries, installation of libraries and headers,
and cleaning. LogiLogi.org Make was inspired by Icmake.

Changes: Lake, the make-tool that uses your C++ compiler for makefile
compilation, can now use separate builddirs. In fact, they are standard
for automatic compilation now. Also, Lake now remembers at which file
compilation stopped at the last compile error, so it can restart from
there again next time. The checks for the need of compilation are
completely separate now, so extensions that parse header files or include
directives are easy to add.

[062] - rsyslog 1.0.2 (Stable)
  by Rainer Gerhards (http://freshmeat.net/users/rgerhards/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 10:48

System :: Logging

About: Rsyslog is an enhanced syslogd. Among other features, it offers
support for reliable syslog over TCP, writing to MySQL databases, fully
configurable output formats (including great timestamps), and the ability
to filter on any part of the syslog message. It is designed as a drop-in
replacement for stock syslogd and thus able to work with the same config
file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require changing the config
file, but in general, this should be fairly easy.

Changes: This release addresses an issue where the MySQL error handler can
lead to an endless loop. This is already fixed in the development branch,
so if you run 1.10.2 there is no need to do anything. If you run the
stable branch and use MySQL functionality, updating is advisable. Please
note that 1.0.2 does not contain any other fixes or feature enhancements.

[067] - SMS Server Tools 2.0.testing-1
  by Stefan Frings (http://freshmeat.net/users/sfrings/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 13:35

Communications

About: The SMS Server Tools (smstools) were made to send and receive SMS
from one or many GSM modems. They include a send/receive daemon and some
sample scripts to build an SMS email gateway and for logging into an SQL
database. The daemon waits for files in an outgoing spool directory and
sends them. It puts all received SMS in an incoming spool directory, and
can call any external program for incoming or outgoing notification. This
software support text messages in 7 and 16 bits (UCS2), as well as 8 bit
binary messages.

Changes: This release is a major rewrite of version 1.16. It combines
smsd, getsms, and putsms into one single program. This reduces disk and
CPU load, and it should fix problems with special characters in messages
that the shell cannot pass properly though command line arguments. This
release introduces a high risk of new bugs, because nearly everything was
modified. Please do not use this version in a production environment.

[068] - SquidClamAV Redirector 1.7.0
  by Michael Lang (http://freshmeat.net/users/nuddelaug/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 22:52

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: SquidClamAV Redirector is a Squid helper script which adds virus
scanning for defined filename extensions. It has been tested with Python,
pyclamav, ClamAV, and Squid. Squid has to be configured to use
"redirect_program" and to either deny access to a URL defined in the SCAVR
configuration or to redirect to a remote Site which displays an error (and
some information). SCAVR handles the request as given from Squid,
downloads the URL, and scans it for known viruses. It rewrites the URL
from Squid to a blocked URL or an information page with information about
the scanning results.

Changes: A check that can be enabled in the configuration was added to
allow unscannable URLs to be restricted. Minor bugs in the whitelist
feature were fixed.

[069] - strongSwan 2.5.5
  by Andreas Steffen (http://freshmeat.net/users/asteffen/)
  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 02:25

Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Networking

About: strongSwan is a complete IPsec and IKEv1 implementation for Linux
2.4 and 2.6 kernels. It interoperates with most other IPsec-based VPN
products. It is a descendant of the discontinued FreeS/WAN project. The
focus of the strongSwan project is on strong authentication mechanisms
using X.509 public key certificates and optional secure storage of private
keys on smartcards through a standardized PKCS#11 interface. A unique
feature is the use of X.509 attribute certificates to implement advanced
access control schemes based on group memberships.

Changes: A new pkcs11proxy=yes parameter was added, which opens the
PKCS#11 smartcard interface to other applications for RSA encryption and
decryption via the whack interface. The proxy interface can be used for
securing symmetric encryption keys required by the dm-crypt disk
encryption schemes. During system installation, a private RSA key and a
self-signed certificate containing the hostname are now automatically
created by the new scepclient function, thus facilitating the first steps
in setting up a simple VPN connection.

  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 10:44

About: Web Performance Analyzer is a Web performance tool that allows
designers to measure, analyze, estimate, and track Web page performance.
It is available as a standalone program and an Eclipse plugin. WPA
captures Web pages as you browse and reveals dynamic HTTP requests,
forwards, and other low-level details that aren't visible from a browser.
But unlike other simple protocol sniffers, WPA can tell you if your Web
pages are getting faster or slower by replaying recorded sessions and
comparing the current performance to previous measurements.

versions, the Free Edition and the Pro Edition. The only difference is the
Pro addition works with SSL.

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.

Changes: There's been a flurry of recent builds, so this is a combined
changelog for the builds 617, 618, 619. The bugs fixed are bugs 289, 295,

  Wed, Oct 5th 2005 13:31

Software Development :: Code Generators
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: XCC is a tool for building XML format parsers. One way to describe
what XCC does is by analogy with a generic parser generator, e.g. yacc or
bison. Yacc needs a lexical analyzer to function properly, and that
lexical analyzer is usually built with (f)lex. In the XML world, there are
a few packages which fill in the role of lex (expat and libxml are the most
known), but the high-level grammar parsing is usually done by a
hand-written code; writing such a parser is a tedious and error-prone
task. XCC was created to help developers in writing reliable
easy-to-understood parsers for handling complex XML-based grammars.

Changes: Implemented defining and run-time checking of the cardinality of
elements and attributes. Implements output of W3C XML schema.

(in XML), XINS will transform them to HTML-based documentation and Java
code for both the client-side and the server-side. The communication is
based on HTTP. XINS competes with the complex SOAP technology. Main design
goals include simplicity, scalability, and testability. XINS is not only a
specification technology, but also an application development framework.
It offers transaction logging, unique log documentation, and active code
