  by napi (http://freshmeat.net/users/napi/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 03:21

Software Development :: Compilers

About: Axiomatic Multi-Platform C (AMPC) is a C compiler suite with an IDE
that generates Java bytecode to produce platform independent applicatons.
It supports a very large subset of ANSI C (1989). It can be used to
develop new applications using C as well as port existing applications
written in C to run on JVM enabled devices. A JNI (JVM Native Interface)
feature is available for calling native C or C++ functions. Also, many
Java methods can be called from AMPC. The asm() directive can be used to
embed Jasmin assembly code within C source code. It is useful for writing
new applications using existing C skill-sets and porting C programs.

Changes: Further improvements were made to the support for 64-bit DOUBLE
type operations.

[008] - Buffy and Libbuffy 0.11
  by Enrico (http://freshmeat.net/users/zini/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 12:04

Communications :: Email

About: Buffy displays a window with a summary of your mailboxes and lets
you open them in your mail program. It is written with the intent of being
a handy everyday tool for people working with large volumes of mail. For
mutt users, it can be a nice front-end to supplement the simple built-in
folder browser when one has many folders to keep track of. It tries hard
to work out of the box and looks for mail folders in sensible places and
comes with reasonable defaults. It supports mail stored in maildir, mbox,
and gzipped mbox format.

Changes: Buffy now correctly detects when a folder in mailbox format has
been changed. It also allows you to set single folders to 'always show'
(useful, for example, for the 'sent mail' folder) and 'always hide'
(useful for spam folders which otherwise always show because they always
have new mail).

About: Cyphesis is a fantasy MMORPG server (and NPC engine for servers)
using AI/A-Life techniques which doesn't have a predefined story. It is
the Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life server/client used by the
WorldForge project.

Changes: A bug with scripts that meant many entities in the world were
inanimate has been fixed. The movement code has been enhanced to prevent
NPCs from jumping around the map. Server monitoring from an admin client
is now fixed. A bug which caused server CPU load to go 100% when an NPC
cut down a tree has been fixed. Denial of service attacks that open
multiple connections and hold them open are now handled. The signal code
has been ported to build on FreeBSD.

[012] - FlashUnity 0.2b
  by Cyberlot (http://freshmeat.net/users/cyberlot/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 19:05

Communications :: Chat
Games/Entertainment

About: FlashUnity is a channel-based approach to an XML flash
communications server and chat room. By using the concept of channels and
filters, each of which handles a different task, the FlashUnity server
becomes extremely flexible and easy to extend. Also, by using channels it
is possible to run multiple modular functions within the same server.
Filters allow you to prefilter input for all channels or provide other
functionality to all channels. This is a total rewrite of CyberSS, and the
APIs and XML have multiple major changes. There are currently no working
Flash clients.

Changes: This release reworks the API for channeling to support channels
and filters using an observer pattern layout.

Text Processing :: Fonts

About: FONTpage is a Python font viewing/image-generating utility. It
displays system fonts and allows you to change the font size and color,
background color, font face, bold, and italics. It also has the ability to
input the text to be displayed, which you can choose to save as a PNG file.
It is handy to view fonts and styles quickly, or to make "logo" graphics.
There are source code, binary, and Slackware packages available.

Changes: This release adds save dialog, which will prompt user for a
location/name to save the image rather than just saving to the home
directory as "current text".png (although the dialog defaults to those
values). This release uses the GTK 2.8 series. Use the binary if you have
an older GTK version and don't want to upgrade at this time.

[016] - GNU Moe 0.5-rc1 (Development)
  by Antonio Diaz Diaz (http://freshmeat.net/users/ant_diaz/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 08:29

Text Editors

About: GNU Moe is a powerful, 8-bit clean, text editor for ISO-8859 and
ASCII character encodings. It has a modeless, user-friendly interface,

Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering

About: Graphics3D is a free, Open Source C++ library for game developers,
researchers, and students. It is a base of robust and high performance
code common to most 3D projects. It is not a standalone graphics or game
engine--it is the set of pieces you need to jumpstart your own engine or
graphics project. The library has two parts: G3D for pure math, and GLG3D
for interacting with hardware acceleration via OpenGL. You can use G3D
without GLG3D if you want to use another 3D API (like DirectX) or don't
like the OpenGL abstraction.

Changes: This release focuses on performance. Core data structures have
been optimized to be up to 10 times faster than their std:: equivalents.
Native Win32 window management has been improved to support multiple
OpenGL contexts. On Linux, processor architectures are now detected and
analyzed for SSE and other extensions. New OpenGL 2.0 features like
GL_EXT_framebuffer_object are loaded by default. GLCaps is now able to
detect common driver bugs. G3D recognizes these bugs and provides fallback
rendering paths for robust 3D application development.

  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 07:49

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: Gwyddion is a modular SPM (Scanning Probe Microsope) data
visualization and analysis tool. It can be used for all most frequently
used data processing operations including: leveling, false color plotting,
shading, filtering, denoising, data editing, integral transforms, grain
analysis, profile extraction, fractal analysis, and many more. The program
is primarily focused on SPM data analysis (e.g. data obtained from AFM,
STM, NSOM, and similar microscopes). However, it can also be used for
analyzing SEM (scaning electron microscopy) data or any other 2D data.

Changes: GLib and GTK+ 2.6 are required, while GtkGLExt is optional now.
Gradients and GL materials are no longer hard-coded. New classes include
GwyInventory, an array and hash table container, a Gtk tree model based on
GwyInventory, and base classes for selections and for resources like
gradients and GL materials. Graph widgets were improved in many areas.
More modules were ported to the new graphs. Selection layers were
reworked, and elliptic selection was added. Improvements merged from 1.13
include MI file import, Facet analysis improvements, Minkowski
functionals, and others. Modules are built with libtool, so they should
build on Mac OS X.

Multimedia :: Graphics
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Scientific/Engineering

About: JGraph is a free, mature, and robust Java Graphing framework that
fully complies with Swing design principles. It contains all the graph
visualization and interaction functionality you might expect in a graph
library, including multiple views, layering, zoom, drag and drop, undo,
automatic expanding and collapsing, routing, and layouts. You can create
stunning workflow editors, call graphs, CAD tools, network diagrams,
database visualization tools, and more. It can also be deployed on the
server-side with a large range of image exporting functionality. It is
fully documented and commercially supported.

Changes: This release fixes a critical bug whereby the initialization
ordering of certain static variables was not deterministic and could cause
editing to fail. Only users of 5.7.3 are affected by this and, so far, the
HelloWorld example was the only application demonstrating this problem.

Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: LGeneral is a turn-based strategy engine heavily inspired by Panzer
General. Move your units each turn and attack your enemies in order to
capture strategic objectives to win a battle. LGeneral uses the SDL
library for graphics and sounds.

Changes: Hex tiles that are too far away for an aircraft to return to an
allied airfield again (before fuel runs out) are now marked red. In bad
weather, fuel cost is only doubled for ground/naval units and there are
reinforcements for Norway. You may now cycle through all units that can
still fire using 'f' (forward) and 'F' (backward). The same applies for
all units that can still move using 'm' and 'M'. On 'End Turn' the game is
autosaved to a new Slot 'A'.

Education
Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)
Education :: Testing

About: LON-CAPA (The LearningOnline Network with CAPA) is a learning
content and course management system. It offers an underlying shared
content pool from which instructors across departmental and institutional
boundaries can assemble granular learning content for their courses. It
has strong assessment capabilities, both formative (homework and in-class
using wireless PDAs) and summative (online and bubblesheet exams), with a
one-source multiple-target strategy for the content. It offers students
portfolio space in which they can stage materials for submission to
projects, and provides a number of tools for synchronous and asynchronous
student-student and student-faculty communication. LON-CAPA scales well
with number of students, as load-balancing is possible across the whole
network of servers at participating institutions.

Changes: In this release, the individual "View Recent Student Activity"
screen is again functional, and caching times on resource access
permission were shortened to provide a quicker system-wide turnaround on
changes. Configuration options were added to the print screen and
associated contextual help was improved. Also, the implementation of
configuration options for bubblesheet exams was improved, and encrypted
URLs now work under SuSE 9.2.

[024] - Magellan Metasearch 1.2.3b
  by badibouzouk (http://freshmeat.net/users/badibouzouk/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 12:03

Communications
Information Management
Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

Changes: The cluster-based filter system introduced a bug that prevented
the newly-discovered search results from being counted correctly. This
could cause e-mail alerts to not be sent.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
System :: Monitoring

About: Monit is a utility for managing and monitoring processes, files,
directories, and devices on a Unix system. It conducts automatic
maintenance and repair and can execute meaningful causal actions in error
situations. It can be used to monitor files, directories, and devices for
changes, such as timestamps changes, checksum changes, or size changes. It
is controlled via an easy to configure control file based on a free-format,
token-oriented syntax. It logs to syslog or to its own log file and
notifies users about error conditions via customizable alert messages. It
can perform various TCP/IP network checks, protocol checks, and can
utilize SSL for such checks. It provides an HTTP(S) interface for access.

Changes: New features in this release included support for scanning files
using regular expressions, which is useful if you regularly need to scan
log files and perform an action if a certain pattern occurs. The default
action is to send an alert email upon a pattern match. Support for error
notification reminders was added along with fault tolerant monitoring that
allows conditional actions based upon error frequency.

[053] - Virtual Universe 0.55 (Virtual World Server)
  by Oxygenic (http://freshmeat.net/users/oxygenic/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 12:30

Communications :: Chat
Games/Entertainment
Multimedia :: Graphics

About: The "Virtual Universe" is a 3D cyberspace which offers more
possibilities than just chat: it is a combination of the Web, chat, and
instant messaging within a realistic, three-dimensional cyberspace. Here
people can meet, interact with each other, and build houses and whole
worlds. The "Virtual Universe" is a virtual reality environment which runs
on top of the Internet.

Changes: A Worldserver no longer goes down automatically when its
Uniserver exits. It stays active and tries to reconnect when the parent
server is back.

[054] - Web Performance Trainer 2.8 Build 623
  by Michael Czeiszperger (http://freshmeat.net/users/czei/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 12:11

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Testing

About: Web Performance Trainer is a load testing and stress testing tool
for Web servers. Its statistical analysis takes your site's performance
criteria, and determines the number of users your Web site can handle.
Because data is collected at the URL level, it not only identifies slow
Web pages, but identifies the particular part of the Web page that caused
the problem. Web Performance Trainer includes hard-to-find features such
as IP spoofing, client certificates, multiple simultaneous test cases,
authentication, SSL recording and playback, automated analysis, and more.

Changes: This minor update brings some refinements from the field using
WPT for clients. The first new feature of having data extractors register
errors on the playback tab means you'll be able to see the Web pages that
are generating parser errors in a complicated Application State Management
(ASM) configuration. Support for dynamically generated path segments has
also been added.

[055] - xtklib 0.1.0
  by X§hadow (http://freshmeat.net/users/xorshadow/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 03:41

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Widget Sets

About: xtklib provides a simple, complete API to developers who want to
create cross-platform software. In particular, the library provides a full
abstraction layer between the APIs and the main services offered by the
underlying operating system (eg. threads, processes, GUI, filesystem,
etc.) plus a set of generic utilities (eg. strings and data structures).
It makes full use of all features of C++ like RTTI, templates, and
exceptions, thus obtaining a strongly object-oriented set of APIs. The
library is composed of two main modules: "Base" and "Widgets".

Changes: In this release only the "Base" module works and the library can
only be compiled statically.

[056] - yafc 1.1.1
  by Spliced Networks LLC (http://freshmeat.net/users/splicednetworks/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 03:17

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

About: Yafc is yet another FTP client which features a directory cache,
remote filename completion, aliases, colorized ls, recursive
get/put/ls/rm, nohup mode transfers, tagging (queueing), multiple
connections, proxy support, and more. It has also support for Kerberos
authentication and SSH2 (sftp).

Changes: This patch release fixes a number of minor issues including ls -t
(time ordered listing), a double fclose() segfault, and an autoconf herror
include. The code was modified to use strtoul/strtoull. getpass hook
routing was changed to use new code. A Ctrl+c local echo problem at the
password prompt was fixed. The TODO list was updated, a roadmap for
version 2.0 was added, and remaining bugs were confirmed as fixed,
non-issues, or pending. A KNOWN_ISSUES file was included with three
outstanding known issues, the most severe involving slow SFTP transfer
rates.

[057] - Yxa 0.90pre2
  by Fredrik Thulin (http://freshmeat.net/users/fredrikthulin/)
  Thu, Oct 6th 2005 03:21

About: Yxa is a SIP stack and a set of SIP server applications written in
Erlang/OTP. The SIP stack is RFC3261 compliant. Among the features
implemented are SIP registrar, SIP router, forking, CPL, IPv6, TLS, ENUM,
PSTN gateway access control and modular user database backends. The main
goal of the project is to create a robust SIP server platform that can
scale to tens of thousands of users, be interoperable through standards
compliance, and still have short time-to-market for new features due to
the use of a high level language.

Changes: The program no longer terminates the listener in the event of SSL
socket accept() errors to avoid a denial of service. SSL subjectAltName
checking was implemented. A couple of bugs were fixed.
