[001] - abcm2ps 4.11.8 (Development)
  by Guido Gonzato (http://freshmeat.net/users/goccia/)
  Thu, Oct 13th 2005 07:27

Printing

About: abcm2ps is a package that converts music tunes from ABC format to
PostScript. Based on abc2ps version 1.2.5, it was developed mainly to
print baroque organ scores that have independant voices played on one or
more keyboards, and a pedal-board. It introduces many extensions to the
ABC language that make it suitable for classical music.

Changes: This release has minor layout fixes and introduces a new +xstem+
decoration.

  Thu, Oct 13th 2005 10:43

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Software Distribution

About: BitTorrent is a tool for copying files from one machine to another.
FTP punishes sites for being popular. Since all uploading is done from one
place, a popular site needs big iron and big bandwidth. With BitTorrent,
clients automatically mirror files they download, making the publisher's
burden almost nothing.

Changes: Donation nagging was removed. Global status lights were added.
The installer was vastly improved. External drag and drop of files and
URLs was added. The GUI and layout were improved. Startup time on
trackerless torrents was greatly improved. Several bugs were fixed.

About: GNU Wget is a utility for noninteractive download of files from
the Web. It supports HTTP and FTP protocols, as well as retrieval through

[017] - gpgdir 0.9.4
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Thu, Oct 13th 2005 10:37

Security :: Cryptography

About: gpgdir is a Perl script that uses the CPAN GnuPG module to encrypt
and decrypt directories using a GPG key specified in ~/.gpgdirrc. It
supports recursively descending through a directory in order to make sure
it encrypts or decrypts every file in a directory and all of its
subdirectories. All file mtime and atime values are preserved across
encryption and decryption operations. In addition, gpgdir is careful not
to encrypt hidden files and directories.

Changes: The test mode has been updated to encrypt and decrypt a testing
file within the directory to be encrypted or decrypted. This file is
located at dir/gpgdir_test, and is removed after the test is completed.
There is a fix for the "protocol error: expected SHM_GET_XXX got
GOOD_PASSPHRASE" error in the GnuPG module.

About: The Hecl Programming Language is a high-level scripting language
implemented in Java. It is intended to be small, extensible, extremely
flexible, and easy to learn and use. It is intended as a complement to the
Java programming language, not a replacement. As such, it tries to do well
what Java doesn't, and leaves those tasks to Java for which it is best
suited. It is also easy to add Hecl to Java, or write new Hecl commands in
Java. It aims to be a very immediate language you can pick it up and start
doing useful things with it quickly.

Changes: The documentation has been updated with a basic tutorial on
creating J2ME applications. Several new commands have been added,
including logical operators and exit. The applet code has been updated.

About: HTTP Time Protocol is a time synchronization tool that uses Web

behind a corporate firewall, NAT device, or proxy server, HTP will still
be able to synchronize the time. For high precision time synchronization,
use ntpd.

Changes: The poll cycle loop is now sped up once a time offset has been
detected. Systematic drift was added to the syslog logging (daemon only).
A "adjtimex_parameters.sh" script that may help to reduce the drift of
your system clock was included. "precision" was changed from microseconds

About: JJukebox is a multiuser music server written in Java and aimed at
home/office use. Many people can log on to the server and rate how well
they like particular abums/tracks, and the server will try it's best to
only play music that everyone currently logged onto it likes. It is
capable of playing all of the usual media types, including Ogg and MP3.
The main interface for the server is via telnet.

Changes: This version adds a new LoopingQueue. Magazine storage has been
altered so that the server benefits from very fast startup and shutdown
times. A deadlock was eliminated in the audio player. The playback buffer
was increased to help prevent audio skipping on slower machines. The
installer now works properly on Windows and Linux platforms, and a new

[028] - Linux NTFS 1.12.1 (ntfsprogs)
  by Richard Russon (http://freshmeat.net/users/flatcap/)
  Thu, Oct 13th 2005 13:59

Desktop Environment :: File Managers
Software Development :: Documentation
Software Development :: Libraries

About: Linux NTFS provides Linux kernel drivers, a multiplatform NTFS
library, and tools to create, resize, clone, rescue, query, label and fix
NTFS volumes, and to undelete, resize, list, and query files for the
filesystem used by Windows XP, 2003, 2000, NT4, and Longhorn. It also
provides support for the Logical Disk Manager (LDM) that controls Windows'
Dynamic Disks and is used to create software mirrors, stripes, and RAID.

Changes: Fixes hardcoded location for uninstalling the mount.ntfs-fuse
hardlink to match the relocatable location for installing it. Changes
mount.ntfs-fuse and mkfs.ntfs to be symlinks instead of hardlinks, and
moves both to /sbin rather than prefix/sbin. $destdir is still obeyed, so
building packages works, as well as installing into alternate chroot /
other systems. Some corner cases and all memory leaks in ntfscmp have been
fixed, and corrupt NTFS is handled more gracefully. If the system does not
have realpath(), this release will supply its own dummy version that just
copies the string.

Information Management :: Records Management

About: Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex query
language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to search through
pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language enables users to
perform far more complex queries than what common search engines currently
support. It can be fed any custom sources, since its abstraction layer
manages the search results and their meta tags in a uniform way. In
conjunction with the local process scheduler (such as "cron"), Magellan
enables you to save your requests and replay them later automatically; new
results are sent through email and RSS in realtime. Magellan also provides
full anonymity through smart multi-proxy support.

Changes: A new driver for the AskJeeves search engine has been added ; it
implements the "site" and "inurl" operators, and features some specific
options such as date range search and language search.

[049] - Seismic Toolkit 0.31

  Thu, Oct 13th 2005 02:55

Scientific/Engineering

About: Seismic Toolkit is a tool for processing and displaying seismic
signal data in a graphical interface. It reads seismic signals in SAC
format, and provides a number of user operations, such as zooming,
filtering, spectral analysis, polarisation analysis, time-frequency
representation, Hilbert transform, and singular value decomposition.

Changes: Computation of Moment magnitude (Mw) and scalar seismic moment
(Mo) was added to the UTILITIES program. Mw and Mo are computed via the
mantle magnitude Mm, working at a variable period of between 50 and 400s.
The computation of Mw is very straightforward and simple: it just needs
the SAC_ASCII files to be located in a directory and for the configuration
file to be modified to contain the origin time and hypocenter coordinates.
The final result is the average of the magnitudes computed on all
stations.
