Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion
About: ANDREW's Not a DVD Ripping and Encoding Wizard, but an interactive
wrapper to simplify the use of oggenc, mencoder, and mkv/ogmmerge to
create, from a DVD, one or more Matroska or Ogg Media files containing an
ISO/IEC MPEG-4 Part 2 compliant video track, encoded using the FFmpeg
libavcodec or the XviD codec, one or more AC-3 or Vorbis audio tracks, a
chapter index, and, optionally, one or more subtitle tracks.
Changes: VobSub and SRT subtitle support for Matroska files has been
added. Vorbis audio volume normalization support has been added. The way
of creating and removing temporary files has been improved (multiple
running instances of the script in the same working directory are now
supported). Various minor bugs have been fixed. The documentation files
were re-licensed with the GNU GPL.

System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: Atop is an ASCII full-screen performance monitor, similar to the
top command. At regular intervals, it shows system-level activity related
to the CPU, memory, swap, disks and network layers, and it shows for every
active process the CPU utilization in system and user mode, the virtual and
resident memory growth, priority, username, state, and exit code. The
process level activity is also shown for processes which finished during
the last interval, to get a complete overview about the consumers of
things such as CPU time. Atop only shows the active system-resources and
processes, and only shows the deviations since the previous interval.
Changes: New features were added to cumulate utilization of CPU and memory
(and disk and network if kernel patches are installed) per user or per
program name. Support for process accounting version 3 (which is used by
Mandriva) was added and minor bugfixes were made.

by Jens Låås (http://freshmeat.net/users/khaldun/)
Tue, Nov 8th 2005 02:52
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: Attachment Ripper and Displacement System (aradis) is a filter that
removes attachments from email. The removed attachment is sent to a
specified resource for storage. The attachment is replaced with a notice
of where the removed attachment may be found. The filter can also rename
filenames for security. It uses GMime for MIME handling.
Changes: The filte now uses the configured SYSCONFDIR to determine where
the default config file should be. More fail-safe operation was achieved.
A default config is now used if no config file is found. x86_64 64-bit
fixes were made along with improvements to the build system.

[006] - Backup Manager 0.5.9b
by Alexis SUKRIEH (http://freshmeat.net/users/sukria/)
Tue, Nov 8th 2005 06:00
About: Backup Manager is a small and basic tool for generating archives.
It is designed for those who don't want an obfuscated tool for making
tarballs. It can make tar, tar.gz, tar.bz, and zip archives. It can be run
in a parallel mode with different configuration files. Archives are kept
for a given number of days. Its upload system can use ftp or scp to
transfer the generated archives to a list of remote hosts. The
configuration file is very simple and basic.
Changes: This release provides DVD burning support with growisofs and two
new methods for generating archives: one for backing up SVN repositories
(with svnadmin), the other for making generic archives based on the output
of a given command. Some bugs have also been closed. The generated MD5
files are now compliant with the md5 program. The French and German
translations have been updated.

Tue, Nov 8th 2005 11:46
Text Processing :: Filters
Utilities
About: bbe is a sed-like editor for binary files. Instead of reading input
in lines as sed, bbe reads arbitrary blocks from an input stream and
performs byte-related transformations on found blocks. Blocks can be
defined using start/stop strings, stream offset and block length, or a
combination. Basic editing commands include delete, replace,
search/replace, binary operations (and, or, etc.), append, and bcd/ASCII
conversion. For examining the input stream, it contains some grep-like
features like printing the input file name, stream offset, and block
number of found blocks. Block contents can also be printed in different
formats like hex, octal, ASCII, and binary.
Changes: More sane results when byte ranges of i and d commands overlap.

About: BMP is an audio player that tries to maintain a stable audio
playback core with a powerful, yet easy-to-use remote API using DBus,
while also providing a skinned, yet easy and understandable user interface
with the core GUI.
Changes: The media library dialog, now using HRel, was restored. Drag and
Drop support for instantaneous creation of playlists was extended to
accommodate all available container types/plugins (currently: folder, M3U,
PLS, and XSPF) and not be limited to folders only. The build system was
made fully POSIX shell compliant. Versioning was added to the on-disk

[015] - ConfigObj 4.0.1
by Fuzzyman (http://freshmeat.net/users/fuzzyman/)
Tue, Nov 8th 2005 05:55
About: ConfigObj is a simple but powerful config file reader and writer
for Python applications. It is very easy to use and has a straightforward
programmer's interface and a simple syntax for config files. It also
supports nested sections to any level, list values, multiple line values,
string interpolation, a powerful validation system, including automatic
type checking and conversion, repeated sections, default values,
preservation of comments and the order of keys and sections, and no
external dependencies.
Changes: Minor bugfixes and feature enhancements were done. A bug in
"Section.walk" when transforming names as well as values was fixed. The
"istrue" section method was added, which fetches the boolean equivalent of
a string value. "list_values=False" was fixed, so single line values are
not quoted or unquoted. See
http://www.voidspace.org.uk/python/weblog/arch_d7_2005_11_05.shtml#e129

[030] - getmail 4.4.0 (Stable)
by Charles Cazabon (http://freshmeat.net/users/twoflower/)
Tue, Nov 8th 2005 14:39
Communications :: Email
Communications :: Email :: Email Clients (MUA)
Communications :: Email :: Filters
About: getmail is intended as a simple, secure, and reliable replacement
for fetchmail. It retrieves email (either all messages, or only unread
messages) from one or more POP3, SPDS, or IMAP4 servers (with or without
SSL) for one or more email accounts, and reliably delivers into
qmail-style Maildirs, mboxrd files, or through external MDAs (command
deliveries) specified on a per-account basis. getmail also has excellent
support for domain (multidrop) mailboxes, including delivering messages to
different users or destinations based on the envelope recipient address.
Changes: Adds a new POP3-over-SSL initialization class, which is
automatically used when Python 2.4 or newer is in use. This reduces the
overhead involved in retrieving messages from a POP3 SSL server (reduces
systime about 35%, user time about 50%, and wall time 10-30%). A
getmail_fetch configuration-less command line POP retriever has been
added, which is perfect for scripting use. Relative imports within the
getmailcore package has been eliminated.

About: Imagero Reader is a Java library for reading image files. Supported
file types include BMP, GIF, TIFF, PNG, JNG, MNG, JPEG (including 12-bit
grey), PSD, PBM, PGM, PPM, TGA, EPS, EPSI, and EPSF. The following RAW
file types are also supported, at least partially: MRW, CRW, NEF, DCR, and
DNG. It can read thumbnails, read metadata (IPTC, EXIF, and XMP), edit
metadata, get image width and height, get the number of images contained
in a file, define an area to read, add a ProgressListener, choose an image
channel to read, set a scale factor, set subsampling (JPEG only), and read
an image (or channel) directly into an array.
Changes: A new bug introduced in 1.79_93 (only with JPEGs from digital
cameras) has been fixed. This version simplifies TIFF thumbnail handling.
It has some new methods, and some old methods have changed behavior.
TiffReader#getImageCount returns the real image count; empty and thumbnail
IFDs are not included. Use TiffReader#getIFDCount() to get the total IFD
count. TiffReader#getThumbnailCount() returns the count of thumbnail IFDs.

by Paolo Lucente (http://freshmeat.net/users/plucente/)
Tue, Nov 8th 2005 23:27
Internet :: Log Analysis
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: pmacct is a small set of IPv4/IPv6 accounting and aggregation
tools. Aggregation of IP traffic revolves around the concept of primitives
(VLAN id, source and destination MAC addresses, IP addresses, networks, AS
numbers, ports, ToS field, and IP protocol are supported) that may be
employed alone or arbitrarily combined with others to form complex
aggregation methods. It supports custom historical breakdown, packet
sampling, filtering and tagging, recovery actions, and triggers. Libpcap
(and promiscuous mode if required), NetFlow v1/v5/v7/v8/v9, and sFlow
v2/v4/v5 are supported.
Changes: Hot map reloading has been introduced. Maps now can be modified
and then reloaded without having to stop the daemon. SIGUSR2 has been
reserved for this use. The feature applies to Pre-Tagging map
(pre_tag_map), Networks map (networks_file), and Ports map (ports_file).
Some major issues have been solved in the processing of libpcap-format
savefiles. The "sql_table_schema" directive now allows you to chain more
SQL statements as part of the SQL table creation. Integration with
daemontools was improved. Minor bugfixes were made to the print plugin.

[058] - Python Remote Call Module 0.0.2
by Gernot Payer (http://freshmeat.net/users/sigepaye/)
Tue, Nov 8th 2005 11:40
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Python Remote Call Module allows the instantiation and transparent
usage of remote objects. All objects are server-based. On the client side,
dynamically created stub objects make using these remote objects very easy.
Mechanisms for connection handling and automatic server setup allow passing
of local references to the server.
Changes: Data attributes of remote objects can now be accessed. This is
due to extensions and improvements of the network protocol, and the
implementation of custom attribute access methods in the stub classes on
the client side. The server was improved as well. This includes per-client
reference counting and better connection handling. Many bugs and strange
corner cases were fixed. This release gives a hint on how this module is
supposed to work once it is finished.

[065] - simput 0.4
by acomjean (http://freshmeat.net/users/acomjean/)
Tue, Nov 8th 2005 07:45
About: Simput is a group of utilities useful for creating PHP Web sites.
It includes a library that converts XML into an HTML form. Form input
validation is included (which checks if required fields are entered) and
another form will be created to highlight fields which need to be entered.
Another included library makes data from a database or user input safer for
HTML display. It also includes utilities to manipulate ISO dates to and
from the US format. Another library can read a directory into an array
with filtering by regular expressions.
Changes: The PHP form generator was updated. Hidden, select, checkbox, and
password field types were added. Form submits were made "sticky", meaning
that user input stays when the form is regenerated because fields were
left out. Formatting options were added, including table options.
Formatting can be done globally over the entire form or on a element by
element basis.
