[001] - ADOdb Lite 1.04
by Panama Jack (http://freshmeat.net/users/panamajack/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 21:44
Database
Database :: Front-Ends
About: ADOdb Lite is a small, fast replacement for ADODB that uses 1/6th
of the memory and is up to 300% faster, while being compatible with a
subset of the most commonly used ADODB commands. It supports Frontbase,
MaxDB, MiniSql, MSSQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, and Sybase.
Changes: All of the ADOdb Date functions are supported. To use them you
need to add the date module to the connection string or the
adodb.config.php. A new encryption method was added to the Session Library
for SHA1 encryption. Limited support for the ADOdb Error Handler,
Exceptions, and Pear Errors has been included. Initializing these extra
features is exactly the same as with ADOdb. A new client-accessible
variable (sql) has been added, and can be accessed using $db->sql.

[009] - audio convert 0.3.1
by thetroublemaker (http://freshmeat.net/users/thetroublemaker/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 16:42
Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Conversion
About: audio convert is a script that converts between WAV, Ogg, MP3,
MPC, FLAC, APE, AAC, and WMA files. It has an easy-to-use interface that
makes it possible to fill in the tags for a few formats, copy the tags
from input files into the new files, and choose the quality of
compression. The script was initially designed for the Nautilus file
browser and can be easily installed into Nautilus by using the installer
provided with the script. You can then right-click on files and choose
"audio-convert" from the "scripts" menu. The script is also known to
work on rox or directly from a shell.
Changes: The question asking process has been rewritten. Instead of a
series of questions, this release has a checklist with options. Checks for
two codecs have been changed. A function has been rewritten for efficiency.
An installer has been created. The README has been updated, as well as
English, Italian, and Dutch translations. There are some bugfixes.

by Fabrizio Parrella (http://freshmeat.net/users/dnfnva/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 14:21
Software Development :: Libraries :: PHP Classes
About: bibEC Process Card is a class that processes credit card payments
via one of the multiple supported payment gateways. Currently, these
include Plug and Pay, Authorize.net, ViaKlix, Paynet, and other minor
gateways. Changing between payment gateways is mostly a matter of changing
the class constructor parameter. It provides a payment gateway independent
API with functions for logging the payment activity, setting
authentication credentials, submitting requests, and retrieving the
results. Submissions are performed securely when possible using SSL or
Curl.
Changes: A minor problem with paynet and plug'n'pay has been fixed.

[014] - ccbuild 1.5.0
by A. Bram Neijt (http://freshmeat.net/users/bmm/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 05:32
Software Development :: Build Tools
About: ccbuild is like a dynamic Makefile. ccbuild finds all programs in
the current directory (containing "int main") and builds them. For this,
it reads the C++ sources and looks at all local and global includes. All
C++ files surrounding local includes are considered objects for the main
program. The global includes lead to extra compiler arguments using a
configuration file. ccbuild splits these arguments for compilation and
linking, keeping the linking arguments back for later use. It should allow
development without any scripting and only simple reusable configuration.
Deployment and distribution should still be done with other tools. It can
create simple Makefiles, A-A-P files, and graph dependencies using DOT
(graphviz) graphs.
Changes: This version has much better error handling and cleanup. Now you
can combine the return code with your svn command to commit only buildable
source trees. A new tree command has been added, and the loop argument has
been updated, finally making it error free and useful.

[017] - CinePaint 0.20-1
by Robin Rowe (http://freshmeat.net/users/robinrowe/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 22:55
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Raster-Based
About: CinePaint is an application primarily used for motion picture
frame-by-frame retouching and dust-busting. It has been used on many
feature films, including The Last Samurai. It is different from other
painting tools because in addition to common 8-bit per channel formats
like JPEG, it supports deep color image formats such as Cineon, DPX,
OpenEXR, and 32-bit TIFF, which are standard in motion picture visual
effects and animation.
Changes: Overall stability was improved and many bugs were fixed. This
version compiles on Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, and BSD under 32-bit and
64-bit architectures. It also added softproofing, GutenPrint CMS Printing,
ICC, and HDR.

[020] - Conary 0.71.0
by Michael K. Johnson (http://freshmeat.net/users/johnsonm/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 16:43
Software Development :: Version Control
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup
About: Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux
distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such
as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across
the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected
repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux
system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor,
it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping
the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from
other repositories across the Internet.
Changes: The source code was rearranged to put conary in its own top-level
"conary" namespace. The cvc clone command has a bug fixed in cloning
shadows; it used to create incorrect version numbers in some
circumstances. The Conary source code is now managed with Mercurial rather
than CVS.

About: Decimail is a mail server supporting IMAP and SMTP that uses a
PostgreSQL database to store messages. Mailboxes are defined using SQL
queries, allowing complex client-independent automatic message filtering
and categorisation. For example you can partition your messages

[030] - fetchmail 6.2.9-rc8 (Unstable)
by Matthias Andree (http://freshmeat.net/users/mandree/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 19:18
Communications :: Email
About: Fetchmail is a free, full-featured, robust, well-documented
remote-mail retrieval and forwarding utility intended to be used over
on-demand TCP/IP links (such as SLIP or PPP connections). It supports
every remote-mail protocol now in use on the Internet: POP2, POP3, RPOP,
APOP, KPOP, all flavors of IMAP, and ESMTP ETRN. It can even support IPv6
and IPSEC.
Changes: A problem where the program would try to connect on the external
rather the loopback interface was fixed along with a crash that occurred
when it couldn't find its own host name. A workaround was added for broken
IMAP servers (such as qmail with Courier-IMAP) that send whole messages
rather than just headers. Some error messages were corrected to be more
clearly understandable and the manual page was updated. POP2 support was
marked as legacy/going away.

Internet
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: Flightdeck-UI is a project that utilizes the ideas in the design of
aircraft controls and instruments for creating general purpose user
interfaces. The project includes Flightdeck-UI Online (a Web-based
dashboard that works entirely through the browser), the Multi-Variable
Monitor (MVM) application, and a Tkinter widget library. Flightdeck-UI
Online is installed on a Web server. Configuration files are simple Python
scripts; two examples are included with the distribution. The MVM
application provides a graphical editor with theme support for quickly
creating Flightdeck-UI control panels. Several such panels are included as
examples. It is not necessary to write code in order to use MVM. For those
wishing to do so, however, plug-in modules are very easy to develop.
Several such modules are provided in the distribution.
Changes: This is a minor change from 0.3.9. The most notable difference is
that the analog clock in the demo will now work correctly during Standard
Time (i.e. when Daylight Savings Time ends). The clock will adjust itself
automatically.

by Tony Walker (http://freshmeat.net/users/TonyRWalker/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 16:53
Database
Database :: API
Database :: Front-Ends
About: PJO (Persistent Java Objects) is a Java library that supports the
storage and retrieval of Java objects, allowing applications to preserve
and persist objects from one application execution to another. PJO aims to
preserve selected Java objects and the relationships between them. It does
not require object-relational mapping. It allows a developer to design
entirely within an object-oriented environment, rather than having to warp
the application to accommodate the constraints of a relational database.
Changes: This release supports lazy unloading, which allows a Java
application to process a network of objects much larger that its JVM, a
classloader to load classes from the database, and utility programs to
store class bytecodes in the database. It supports all the major SQL
databases, including MySQL, Oracle, DB2, MS SQL Server, SyBase, and
PostgreSQL.

by Michiel (http://freshmeat.net/users/michiel/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 14:02
Communications :: Email :: Mailing List Servers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
About: PHPlist is a mailing list and newsletter manager that allows
posting via a Web page. It works well when used for announcements, and can
handle very large email address lists. Users can sign up to multiple lists,
but will only receive a single copy of cross-posted messages. When signing
up, users can identify their geographical location, and messages can be
targetted to these. You can add place holders in your email that will be
replaced with personal details (such as the person's name). Users can
update their own information, and unlike many other mailing list systems,
they can change their email address. HTML emails are supported.
Changes: Several security issues were discovered and fixed. Upgrading is

[068] - Plash 1.14
by mseaborn (http://freshmeat.net/users/mseaborn/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 16:34
Security
System :: Filesystems
System :: Operating System
About: Plash is a secure execution environment for running Linux programs
with the minimum necessary privileges. It is similar to chroot jails, but
is more lightweight and flexible. You can use Plash to grant a process
read-only or read-write access to specific files and directories, mapped
at any point in the filesystem namespace. Plash provides two interfaces:
pola-run, a command line tool, and a Bash-like shell for interactive use.
Plash does not require a modified kernel, and it works with Linux
executables, provided they are dynamically linked.
Changes: This release introduces file powerboxes. Powerboxes are a design
pattern for dynamically granting authority to an interactive GUI program.
A file powerbox works just like a file open/save dialog box, except that
it also grants authority to access a file. Plash provides a module for
making XEmacs use file powerboxes. This means XEmacs does not have to be
run with the user's full authority. It is possible to edit root-owned
files without running XEmacs as root.

About: PolkaDot is extremely simple blogging software. It requires nothing
but a PHP host and a text editor. Installation consists of copying two PHP
scripts and a CSS stylesheet. Configuration is optional and involves very
simple changes to a single file. It's really about as simple as a working
blogging system could be, while still providing features such as
categories and RSS feeds.
Changes: This version refines the paging mechanism and adds the ability to
put posts into multiple categories via symlinks. This multiple category
feature is intended for advanced users and is entirely optional. The
documentation was updated.

About: POPFile is an automatic email classification tool using a Naive

platforms and with most email clients.
Changes: Lots of changes were made to the installer, including the
incorporation of the SSL download. A problem with upgrading the database
was fixed. When a user asks for an SSL connection from POPFile to a POP3
server, the port defaults to 995. Japanese users get support for Japanese
base64 messages. Performance enhancements were made for Kakasi and the
mutex code. A small bugfix was made for the euc-jp encoding on the history

Wed, Nov 9th 2005 10:23
Information Management :: Document Repositories
Information Management :: Metadata/Semantic Models
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search
About: QML (Quantity Modeling Language) is a "thing"-based language for
scientific and mathematical data modeling. Each "thing" is a quantity
which may be associated with either a structure or physical phenomena.
Quantities, in turn, may hold other Quantities or values (numbers or
strings). Higher-level data models, which associate or define meanings to
various quantities (such as velocity or position), can be built from QML
quantities. The higher-level data model (XML) schema that inherits from
QML may be understood, and its instance documents may be parsed into QML
documents and objects by the QMLReader.
Changes: This release adds partial Xerces2 DOM support, and works with
Java 1.4 and Java 1.5 (no JAXP DocumentBuilder/Factory support currently).
The test procedure is a little less chatty. Support has been added for
testing either/both Crimson/Xerces DOM support. (Note: Crimson support
only works with Java 1.4, as Java 1.5 interfaces have DOM lvl 2 and 3,
which crimson doesn't support). This release adds compilerargs, and better
build support for different configurations to build.xml.

[081] - Simplebackup 1.6.0 (Stable)
by Miguel Angelo (http://freshmeat.net/users/miguelangelo/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 16:40
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Simplebackup is a cross-platform backup program. It reads a
configuration file, then it builds a compressed file for each of your
backup directories or files on your backup list, and places the compressed
files into another location. For example, this location can be a network
mapped drive in Windows, an NFS mounted drive in Unix, another hard disk,
an FTP server, one or more email accounts, or a tape device (Unix only).
This will duplicate your information, doing the so called "backup".
Changes: Support for restores with many options and modes, including a
mode that allows synchronizations across servers/locations. Support for
email backups into one or more email accounts. Huge improvements in the
debug and the documentation. A new flexible method to select what files
and directories to reject from the backup, which supports wild cards. New

About: WebTst is a Web development test infrastructure. It aims to
simplify testing by implementing an HTTP and HTTPS capture engine: a Web
proxy which records a tester's actions using any Web browser and then
replays them during testing. It comes with support for cookie handling,
HTTP authentication, concurrency testing, digital certificates, and a
number of simple tests, such as cookie setting, pattern matching, response
status, and many others. It also provides the concept of result analyzer
components and capabilities for maintaining smoke and regression test
suites.
Changes: This is a major bugfix release, and upgrading is highly
recommended for existing users. Support was added for XML::Dumper 0.4
(backwards compatibility) and above, and an upgrade script was developed.
Major fixes were made to handling of interceptor responses (content
transfer chunking, status 100 handling). Post body content storage was
reworked to allow for binary data types. The dashboard interface was
reworked to allow downloading and viewing of post bodies. Interceptor was
fixed to properly capture HTTPS hostnames. A minor fix was made to the
playback_results directory location when running multiple recordings via
suiteRunner.pl.

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
About: WidgetServer is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework which enables
an application to run as either a monolithic Swing app, a client/server
Swing app, or as a Web app without any change and without loss of
functionality. A rich widget set is supported that includes tree views,
tabbed panes, split panels, and much more. A unified widget-based,
object-oriented programming interface for Web and Swing GUIs is offered to
the developer to control and assemble the GUI. Web applications are fully
AJAX enabled. For Swing client/server applications, the framework handles
client/server communication, including compression and security layers. A
GUI builder is included.
Changes: This release brings an enhanced renderer for the HTML slider. A
colorPicker plugin has been implemented, and AJAX-based server push/client
pull functionality is available. The renderers were refactored to minimize
cyclic class dependencies.

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Emulators
About: Wine is an implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.
It does not require Microsoft Windows, but can use native Windows DLLs if
they are available. It provides both a development toolkit for porting
Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many
unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes.
Changes: Support for the Find function in regedit was added. A Winelib app
may now eject a CD. Many MSI improvements were made. Support for running
text-mode apps without X was improved. Support for various code
obfuscation tools was improved. Lots of bugfixes were made.

[100] - XArchive 0.2.6-3
by yargoflick (http://freshmeat.net/users/ligelowbee/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 14:04
System :: Archiving
About: XArchive is a GUI frontend for command-line archiving tools. It
uses external executable wrappers to communicate with the tools. It
consults a wrapper directory at startup to see what types of files it
supports, making adding support for new archive formats a matter of
writing a wrapper for its tool and dropping it in the wrappers directory.
Wrappers are included for TAR, RAR, ZIP, ARJ, 7ZIP, and ACE (extraction
only for ACE).
Changes: This version has wrappers for viewing and extracting from .rpm
and .deb files (modifying debs and RPMs should be done with the
appropriate packaging tools to keep things sane). It also sports a much
friendlier 'extract to' dialog, and the ability to remember the directory
you opened your last xarchive in. On BSD machines, this version should
compile nicely and use wrappers tailored for BSD tar and date tools
(rather than the GNU ones).

[105] - xsd 1.6.0
by Boris Kolpackov (http://freshmeat.net/users/bosk/)
Wed, Nov 9th 2005 05:23
Software Development
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
About: xsd is a W3C XML Schema to C++ translator. It generates a
vocabulary-specific, statically-typed C++ mapping (also called binding)
from XML Schema definitions. The mapping consists of data types that
represent the given vocabulary, a set of parsing functions that convert
XML instance documents to a tree-like in-memory data structure, and a set
of serialization functions that convert the in-memory representation back
to XML. xsd features C++ standard library-based language mapping,
configurable base character type (char/wchar_t), support for all XML
Schema built-in types, custom Schema to C++ namespace mapping,
platform-independent generated code, and more.
Changes: Support for XML Schema polymorphism features (xsi:type and
substitution groups) has been implemented. Extra checks have been added in
the parsing code, preventing construction of inconsistent in-memory
representations from invalid instance documents.
