About: Advanced Stock Tracking System (AST) is a Web-based application for
keeping track of stocks. It features a portfolio with dividend tracking, a
worksheet to keep track of prospects, a stock comparison utility, and a
search engine for the stock market based heavily on technical analysis.

Changes: This release adds an alerts feature, which can email you when
certain events occur such as target prices being reached, moving average
crossover, macd crossover, etc. It also adds a diversification section to
the portfolio, and many other bugfixes and feature enhancements. It is now
easier to setup because default values are provided for many things.

About: amoeba is an XML-based framework for Web environment development
backed by XML databases (the eXist native XML database). It's deployable
as a war archive in servlet containers (like Tomcat and/or Jetty). Almost
no Java knowledge or Java programming is required while developing with
amoeba, except for extending base framework functionality. Programming in
amoeba means writing XML documents. The environment has four
domain-specific languages: pipeline (general XML processing using language
features and by calling tasks), sitemap (for connecting the Web environment
to all other languages), form (HTTP forms processing), and modification.

Security

About: Arudius (formerly Securinix) is a live CD Linux distribution based
on Slackware (Minislack) and Linux Live scripts. It contains an extensive
set of software tools used by IT security professionals for penetration
testing and vulnerability analysis. Its goal is to include the most
comlete set of useful security tools and still maintain a small footprint.

Changes: This release has over 20 new security tools; mostly network
sniffers and automated exploit scripts. It strips down unnecessary files
and libraries and decreases the size of the ISO file from 335 MB down to
207 MB; small enough to fit on a 4" 210 MB mini-CD.

About: audio convert is a script that converts between WAV, Ogg, MP3,
MPC, FLAC, APE, AAC, and WMA files. It has an easy-to-use interface that
makes it possible to fill in the tags for a few formats, copy the tags
from input files into the new files, and choose the quality of
compression. The script was initially designed for the Nautilus file
browser and can be easily installed into Nautilus by using the installer
provided with the script. You can then right-click on files and choose
"audio-convert" from the "scripts" menu. The script is also known to
work on rox or directly from a shell.

Changes: The installer was modified to create the directory it is supposed
to create.

  Fri, Nov 11th 2005 07:25

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: The MCL (Markov Cluster Algorithm) is a fast and scalable cluster
algorithm for graphs based on stochastic flow. The flow process employed
by the algorithm is mathematically sound and intrinsically tied to cluster
structure in graphs, which is revealed as the imprint left by the process.
The threaded implementation has handled graphs of up to one million nodes
within hours, and is widely used in the field of protein family analysis.
It comes with a wide range of sibling utilities for handling and analyzing
graphs, matrices, and clusterings.

Changes: MCL can now read label input in a simple line-based format in
which each line contains two labels and an optional value, separated by
whitespace. Output clusters are returned as lines of tab-separated labels.
The BLAST parser can stream this format directly to mcl, creating a concise
and easy-to-manage sequence clustering pipeline.

Database :: Front-Ends
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: PHP GEN reads the list of tables in a database, lets you select
one, then reads the structure of it, suggests a basic (modifiable)
configuration, and generates good-style and easily maintainable PHP code
capable of listing, searching, adding, editing, detailing, and deleting
records. Both the generated code and the engine itself use Pear::DB for
the database-abstraction layer and Smarty for the presentation/interface
layer. Master/detail (foreign keys) are supported.

Changes: This release includes some feature enhancements and some
bugfixes, of which the most important are: a custom pattern for 'select

primary keys consisting of multiple columns, the ability to restrict
custom file extensions, and a new design for the generated pages.

[051] - PHP-Controller 0.3
  by Eddie Tejeda (http://freshmeat.net/users/nailchipper/)
  Fri, Nov 11th 2005 08:56

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: PHPC implements the controller for building MVC applications. The
controller gives PHP applications a single entry point, from which the
user sends all requests to from the view to model, removing the need to
have to write code describing how the data will interact with the
presentation. This project is strongly influenced by the way current Java
Pages are handled and makes strong use of PHP classes for all pages. The
controller itself is an XML file which determines which classes are
accessible by whom.

Changes: This release adds a debug method which prints the state of the
controller, setDebugLevel, the ability to create aliases, a getClassName
method, and a getGetVariables method which appends values from
controller.xml. It clarifies getSectionName functionality to detect URLs.
It moves to PHP5, using public and private methods/attributes, and uses
PHP5's constructor. It no longer requires you to add .class in the
controller.xml class tag, and no longer uses the weird naming scheme to
determine private methods. It renames Actions to Methods to be a bit
clearer.

About: RLog provides a flexible message logging facility for C++ programs
and libraries. It is subscription based, meaning you can subscribe to
messages of your choice in an number of ways: by hierarchical channel
name (e.g. "debug", "debug/ special", "error", etc.), or filename,
component name, etc. Log messages are individually enabled. It is meant
to be fast enough to leave in production code - even where it may be
called many times, as both the GCC and Intel compilers reduce the logging
overhead a few clock cycles if they are dormant (with no subscribers).
Other add-on components can extend subscriptions to external programs,
allowing you to enable and collect debugging messages remotely.

[057] - Ruport 0.2.2
  by Greg Brown (http://freshmeat.net/users/greg7224/)
  Fri, Nov 11th 2005 11:08

Office/Business

About: Ruport (Ruby Reports) is a powerful report generation engine that
allows users to generate custom ERb templates and easily query various
forms of SQL databases via DBI. It provides helper methods and utilities
to generate professional reports quickly and cleanly.

Changes: All the code in ruportlib is now refactored into modules. An
error in the unit tests was corrected, and extensive renaming was done.
The example code is now available on the RubyForge file release system,
and has been updated to 0.2.2 compatibility. A lot of code cleanup was
done. Upgrading is important because previous versions are not compatible.

Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Modeling
Multimedia :: Graphics :: 3D Rendering
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: VCG ShadeVis computes a simple, static (but much more correct)
per-vertex ambient term. This effect, commonly known as ambient occlusion,
is aimed at providing more faithful shading for realtime rendering. In
practice, rather than considering the ambient lighting to exist uniformly
throughout a scene, this approach determines the ambient brightness of
each part of a surface to be proportional to the extent to which the
surface has "its outward view of its environment" free (i.e., "occluded")
by other surfaces of the object. The most common technique to compute
ambient occlusion is based on shooting rays from each surface element to
evaluate the quantity of light that reaches it. VCG Shadevis uses OpenGL
to accelerate this process by simply rendering the scene orthographically
from a set of uniformly-distributed directions and checking against the
zbuffer whether each vertex is occluded.

About: vdbmaster is a simple program to ease the process of burning movies
to a DVD. It uses growisofs to write the disc, and the VideoDB database for
selecting the movies to write and keeping records of where your movies are
stored. Once the DVD has been written, vdbmaster updates the movies in
VideoDB with the name of the disc where they have been burnt. Then, it
asks whether you want to remove the original files from your hard drive.
It correctly handles movies spanning more than one file, as well subtitle
files, as long as the movie filename (without the extension) is the same.
The code is clean, small, and easily customizable.

Multimedia :: Video
Multimedia :: Video :: Capture
Multimedia :: Video :: Display

About: ZoneMinder is a suite of applications intended for use in video
camera security applications, including theft prevention and child or
family member monitoring. It supports capture, analysis, recording, and
monitoring of video data coming from one or more video or network cameras
attached to a Linux system. It also features a user-friendly Web interface
which allows viewing, archival, review, and deletion of images and movies
captured by the cameras. The image analysis system is highly configurable,
permitting retention of specific events, while eliminating false positives.
ZoneMinder supports both directly connected and network cameras and is
built around the definition of a set of individual 'zones' of varying
sensitivity and functionality for each camera. This allows the elimination
of regions which should be ignored or the definition of areas which will
alarm if various thresholds are exceeded in conjunction with other zones.
All management, control, and other functions are supported through the Web
interface.

Changes: This release revamps the video interface, introduces a time-line
activity view, reworks the xHTML mobile phone interface, and adds lots of
small enhancements to make ZoneMinder faster and easier to use.
