The Problem With Mirrors
by Anthony Bryan (http://freshmeat.net/~antini/)
Section: Editorials
Sat, Feb 25th 2006 00:00

Mirrors are extremely useful when used to their full potential -- but this
rarely happens. There is nothing wrong with mirrors but the way that we use
them. I want to make it so average users who don't (and shouldn't need to)
know too many technical details can automatically make the best use of
mirrors.

[001] - ACE 5.4.10 (Development)
  by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
  Sat, Feb 25th 2006 18:38

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) is an object-oriented
(OO) C++ framework that can help you develop and deploy high-performance
software systems faster and better. ACE is especially useful for systems
that use network and/or inter-process communications and that take
advantage of multithreading. While the ACE source code is free, that's not
the only way you save money with ACE. ACE's wrappers and higher-level
patterns help you develop your software quickly and portably, helping you
to complete your projects on time and within budget.

Changes: This release adds numerous minor bugfixes and extensions.

[002] - appctl 1.2
  by Rainer Meier (http://freshmeat.net/users/skybeam/)
  Sat, Feb 25th 2006 08:09

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Software Distribution
Utilities

About: Appctl is a framework for virtually any server software. It
provides a central script called "ctl" which allows you to start, stop,
restart, maintain, or query the current status of an application. It is
meant as a completely generic replacement for application-specific
startup/stop scripts. The project also supplies generic monitoring scripts
for clusters, which can dramatically decrease clustering costs.

Changes: This is just a simple feature upgrade. If ctl worked for you
before, there is no need to upgrade. This release might be useful for you
if you plan to use it outside of the framework or if you experienced
problems on your Linux version.

Software Development :: Object Brokering :: CORBA

About: autotools-idl is a patch for automake and some autoconf scripts
that adds support for IDL and C++ ORBs. It tries to provide full support
for compiling IDL files to C++ stubs and skeletons. The autoconf scripts
provide unified detection of different C++ ORBs.

Changes: Tuxedo and Orbix support was added and various small fixes were
made.

[004] - BeleniX 0.4
  by Moinak (http://freshmeat.net/users/moinakg/)
  Sat, Feb 25th 2006 00:22

System :: Operating System

About: BeleniX is a new live CD distribution based on the version of
OpenSolaris that runs on x86 machines. It includes all of the OpenSolaris
components (core kernel, libraries, and utilities) and also includes
additional GNU/OSS software. BeleniX will ultimately become a full
OpenSolaris and GNU/OpenSolaris distribution.

Changes: On-the-fly decompression support was added to the lofi kernel
module using zlib. This allows 1.5 GB of open source software to be packed
in under /usr with space for more. Compression significantly reduces bootup
time. The live CD now includes the latest KDE 3.5.1 and Office 1.5 beta. Qt
was built with font antialiasing. Placement of files for Xfce and KDE on
the CDROM was optimized with the help of DTrace (iosnoop.d) and the
mkisofs "-sort" option. This results in shorter KDE startup times.

What makes this program different from similar programs is that you can
download any range of a file.

Changes: It is now possible to select files to be downloaded from
multi-file BitTorrent downloads, The program now re-downloads if resuming
from a server that does not support ranges. Files can now be be extracted
from partially downloaded multi-file BitTorrents. A better piece selection
algorithm was implemented for the BitTorrent protocol. The Extractor and
Merger CLIs now accept input directories and include all *.range files in
them. Protocols are now guessed for input URLs not explicitly specifiying
one. maxSeedingTime configuration was added. Listening ports are now

[026] - Pinot 0.43
  by Fabrice Colin (http://freshmeat.net/users/colinf/)
  Sat, Feb 25th 2006 06:11

About: Pinot is a metasearch tool built around the GTKmm toolkit, the
Xapian information retrieval library, and the language guessing
functionality of libtextcat. It enables one to query search engines, and
display as well as analyze and locally index the returned results. It can
also be used as a lightweight desktop search tool (local documents and
mbox mail accounts can be imported and indexed). The type of documents is
currently limited to plain text, HTML, PDF, and MS Word.

Changes: This release added support for OpenSearch Description plugins in
addition to better handling of Sherlock plugins. The build system now uses
autotools, and a new command-line tool called pinot_search allows queries
to be run from the shell. The UI's extract field is now resizable. Term
prefixes were changed to conform to conventions used by other Xapian-based
tools. Queries on an index that cannot be locked no longer loop. A number
of UTF-8 fixes were made. Errors in worker threads and at startup are
caught and handled more gracefully.

About: Redet is a tool for developing and executing regular expressions
using any of more than 40 search programs, editors, and programming
languages, intended both for developing regular expressions for use

  Sat, Feb 25th 2006 06:13

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Indexing/Search

About: robots.txt is a PHP script that acts like a normal robots.txt file,
but with a few differences. When a Spider attempts to access robots.txt,
the script will "disallow" access to a list of pre-defined directories.
When a normal user attempts to access robots.txt, it will "disallow"
access to all directories. This is a security precuation and an attempt to
prevent users from finding "hidden" directories by looking at the
robots.txt file.

Changes: Hostname checking functionality was added along with partially
implemented IP range checking. Some minor things such as comment typos and
code layout were fixed.

treasure both teams have is counted and the player with the most treasure
wins. Shipwreck is a Web-based Java applet, so it is available for play
online as well as for download.

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Networking
System :: Operating System Kernels

About: The Web100 project was created to produce a complete host-software
environment that will run common TCP applications at 100% of the available
bandwidth, regardless of the magnitude of a network's capability. Web100
has endowed TCP with better instrumentation. This instrumentation is the
foundation for both the TCP autotuning performed in process-level code and
the process- level tools designed to locate bottlenecks within the
following major subsystems: the sending application, the sending OS, the
Internet path, the receiving OS, and the receiving application.
Measurement tools have also been built on this instrumentation to display
performance indicators to end-users, as well as provide internal
diagnostics for network and system administrators.
