System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration
About: Argo is a monitoring system for the Xen hyperviser, comprised of a
network server which runs upon your Xen host and any number of clients
which connect to that server over a socket. Supplied with the server are
two clients: a simple Web-based client and a graphical desktop client. The
clients allow you to start, stop, pause, or query available Xen virtual
instances.
Changes: This release updates the Xen monitor so that it is capable of
reporting upon the amount of network traffic sent and received over each
Xen domain. The PHP and Perl-Gtk clients were both updated, and several
small bugfixes were applied.

[002] - Automated Argument Helper 1.1.4
by Scott McKellar (http://freshmeat.net/users/mck9/)
Sun, Feb 26th 2006 22:19
Software Development :: Code Generators
About: Aargh is a code generator written in C++. Based on specifications
defined in an XML file, it generates C or C++ code to parse a command
line, using the getopt() facility available in Unix, Linux, and similar
environments. It supports command line options with integer arguments,
string arguments, and no arguments. It optionally applies range tests to
validate the option arguments, or calls a user-defined validation
function. The generated code is commented and carefully indented for
readability.
Changes: This release enables the user to specify a non-zero default value
for an integer option. It also upgrades the release level of the included
TinyXml library to version 2.4.3.

System :: Diagnostics
System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking :: Monitoring
About: Bartlby is a network and system monitor, completely written in C,
to provide a scalable framework with the ability to monitor networks of
various sizes. It consists of a core daemon, several plugins, and a Web
GUI (PHP extension). The core daemon checks (over active/passive TCP)
services/hosts and notifies users in case of critical service conditions
(mail, SMS, ICQ, and custom triggers are supported). Bartlby provides an
open plugin interface to give every administrator an easy to use option to
extend the plugin base, and a fully customizable GUI (written in PHP using
a C extension). Nearby everything can be controlled via an XML interface.
Changes: Every single service can now be set so that it needs to be
acknowledged before checking again in case of error. A ./configure script
has been added, the XML interface is now XML-RPC/spec compilant, there are
some minor changes in the network manager, and there are many small fixes
in the UI.

[005] - BitEvolution 1.1.0
by Scott Gillette (http://freshmeat.net/users/scottagillette/)
Sun, Feb 26th 2006 10:08
Software Development :: Libraries
About: BitEvolution is an easy-to-use client/server application that you
can use to keep your distributed application up to date. Modeled after the
Apache ANT project, it is a task-based application intended to eliminate
the work required to write, test, and debug a home-grown update
application. Your distributed application does not have to be written in
Java to take advantage of BitEvolution.
Changes: This release adds the UpdateTask interface so that developers can
write custom tasks that are executed during an application update. All of
the standard tasks (UpdateFile, MakeDirectory, etc.) are packaged and
distributed with BitEvolution. For more information about writing custom
update tasks, see the javadoc in the distribution folder. A DisplayURL
update task has been added that can be used to display a URL to the user
during an update. This can be used to display a Web page in the user's
default browser to inform them of update release notes, etc.

by imipak (http://freshmeat.net/users/imipak/)
Sun, Feb 26th 2006 04:15
Scientific/Engineering :: Astronomy
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization
Software Development :: Libraries
About: CFITSIO is a library of C and Fortran subroutines for reading and
writing data files in the FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) data
format. It simplifies the task of writing software that deals with FITS
files by providing an easy to use set of high-level routines that
insulate the programmer from the internal complexities of the FITS file
format.
Changes: Full support for 64-bit files was added. Complex arithmetic
operations can be performed "on the fly" when input FITS images are
opened. Support for some new 64-bit computer platforms (IBM AIX and NEC
SX) was added. A self-consistency check was added to prevent code that is
compiled with an older version of the CFITSIO "include" files from being
linked to a newer version of the library. Hooks were added to make use of
Mark Calabretta's WCS library.

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
About: Dar is a shell command that makes backup of a directory tree and
files. Its features include splitting archives over several files, CDs,
ZIPs, or floppies, compression, full or differential backups, proper
saving and restoration of hard links and extended attributes, remote
backup using pipes and external command (such as ssh), and rearrangement
of the "slices" of an existing archive. It can now run commands between
slices, encrypt archives, and quickly retrieve individual files from
differential and full backups. Dar also has external GUI like kdar for
Linux, thanks to the well documented API.
Changes: This release brings several new features like full support for
Mac OS X's file forks, archive merging/sub-setting, the ability to save
files more recent than a given date, XML archive listing, file filtering
based on lists of files, a check for file modification while files are
read for backup, proper closing of the archive upon signal reception (so
it can be used for further differential backup), the ability to pause
every N slices, the ability to use a regex expression in filters (-ar/-ag
options), and a snapshot feature. dar_manager now has an interactive mode
and can restore files at a given date.

[043] - LoFiMo 1.0.8
by anzac (http://freshmeat.net/users/anzac/)
Sun, Feb 26th 2006 04:13
Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
System :: Diagnostics
About: The main purpose of LoFiMo is, as the name states, to monitor log
files. It does this in real time, i.e. shows the contents of log files as
they are changing. The user can connect to LoFiMo with a Web browser or
use the console for plain text output. When using a Web browser, the
output can be formatted with cascading stylesheets, which the user can
define. Thus, it is possible to highlight certain log entries with
different colors and fonts. It is also possible to play sounds or execute
commands (send an email, play sound with a custom player, etc.) when a log
entry matches a filter. LoFiMo can parse Apache style log files and syslog
style log files. Among others, there are filters that can parse iptables
logs and merge multiple log lines of Postfix into a single one.
Changes: The referer of Apache log entries is now shown as a hyperlink.
Since hyperlinks in HTML are not automatically formatted with the style of
the enclosing DIV element, a new CSS-style has to be used to format the
referer hyperlinks; for details see the documentation.

[044] - Modeling Framework 0.9
by Sébastien Bigaret (http://freshmeat.net/users/sbigaret/)
Sun, Feb 26th 2006 17:01
Database :: Front-Ends
Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Libraries :: Python Modules
About: Modeling Framework fills the gap between the Python object world
and relational databases in that it allows users to transparently create,
retrieve, update, or delete Python objects from a database without having
to write a single line of SQL. Its main features include generation of
database schema, generation of Python code templates ready to be used,
support for transparent mapping of (class) inheritance in relational
databases, object-oriented query language, use of standard Python getters
to traverse relationships (the related objects are automatically fetched
when needed and when appropriate), and automatic checking for
referential-integrity constraints, etc. Supported databases are MySQL,
Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQLite.
Changes: This release contains an important fix for a problem occurring in
a heavily stressed multi-threaded environment: the framework sometimes
mysteriously failed when trying to fetch objects, or to fetch values for
lazily-initialized objects. It also contains many bugfixes. The framework
is now under the 3-clause BSD license.

About: mod_psldap is an Apache module that performs authentication
authorization against an LDAP server using several different means of
managing the authentication and authorization processes. This
implementation can also manage records through a Web interface, and
authenticate against an LDAP server that restricts the user from reading
the password and the implementation of Kerberos-based authentication to
connect to the LDAP server itself.
Changes: This release provides AJAX functionality, allowing for the DSML
form of the LDAP records to be browsed offline from either the
organizational or management tree views. A minor issue with recognition of
the search scope as defined in the URI has also been addressed, along with
the partial introduction of vcard export capabilities.

[046] - Mp3splt 0.3.1 (GTK GUI)
by Munteanu Alexandru (http://freshmeat.net/users/ion_bidon/)
Sun, Feb 26th 2006 22:17
About: mp3splt is a command-line utility that splits MP3 and Ogg files at
specified times without decoding and re-encoding. It works with Mp3Wrap
and AlbumWrap files and has a silence detection split mode and a "cddb
source" mode. Libmp3splt is a library created from mp3splt. Mp3splt-gtk is
a GTK2 GUI that uses libmp3splt.
Changes: Important bugs with the tags were fixed, so the user can now
choose to use the original tags, cddb or cue tags, or no tags. The
updating of splitpoints was optimized, so there is no longer any trouble
when there are many splitpoints. The tab for split files can erase

Text Processing
Text Processing :: Linguistic
Utilities
About: Msort is a program for sorting files in sophisticated ways. Records
need not be single lines. Key fields may be selected by position, tag, or
character range. For each key, distinct exclusions, multigraphs,
substitutions, and a sort order may be defined. Comparisons may be
lexicographic, numeric, numeric string, hybrid, random, by string length,
angle, date, time, or ISO8601 timestamp. Optional keys are supported.
Msort uses the Unicode character set and provides full Unicode
case-folding. The basic program has a somewhat complex command line
interface, but may be driven by an optional GUI.
Changes: An additional comparison type, numeric string, has been added. In
numeric string comparison, numbers are stored as strings and compared using
a specialized form of string comparison. This guarantees no loss of
precision and allows the sort to take into account differences in the
representation of the numbers as strings. A bug was fixed where msort
failed to open the input file but tried to read from it anyhow.

Scientific/Engineering :: Image Recognition
Software Development :: User Interfaces
About: The reacTIVision framework is an open source, multi-platform

composed of: the feeder, that looks at SMTP daemon logs for the string
++BAN:IP++ and feeds the database accordindly; and the butcher, that looks
at the database and updates /etc/hosts.deny. You may want to run the
butcher on a system that has no access to the SMTP logfiles, but you can

Sun, Feb 26th 2006 04:09
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
About: Tahchee is a tool for developers and Web designers that makes it
possible to easily build a static Web site using the Cheetah template
system. It is used to fill in the gap between bare template and macro
processing system and dynamic template-based Web sites. It acts both as a
build system (à la "make") as well as an extension to the Cheetah template
that makes it really easy to build small to medium-sized sites. It is ideal
for writing open source project or small company Web sites.
Changes: This version comes with many small improvements that make Tahchee
easier to use. These include HTML tidy integration, Cheetah 2.0 support,
improved error reporting, dependency tracking between templates, and
preliminary documentation. Also, the road to 1.0 has been set, for which
you can expect a plugin system, integration of plain text to HTML markup,
and complete documentation.

[072] - Tapestry JSCookMenu 1.0.2 beta
by perseios (http://freshmeat.net/users/perseios/)
Sun, Feb 26th 2006 22:27
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
About: Tapestry JSCookMenu provides a component for the Apache Tapestry
Web framework that makes it possible to create JavaScript menus and
navigation sidebars easily with an arbitrary number of hierarchical pop up
sub menus. The famous JavaScript "JSCookMenu", written by Heng Yuan, is
encapsulated within the component. The component gives an easy
Tapestry-like programming interface to the Web developer. There are some
built-in themes for the look of the menu. It is easy to create your own
themes or to override some property of a given theme.
Changes: It seems that in some deployment environments, resources must be
loaded from the classpath with a leading "/" before their names. Now, if
loading with an unslashed name fails, loading with the slashed name is
attempted. Line precise error reporting is supported.
