Creating Charts and Graphs with GNU R
by Stuart Robinson (mailto:[email protected])
Section: Tutorials
Sat, Jun 17th 2006 00:00

As the R homepage explains, "R is a language and environment for
statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar
to the S language and environment which was developed at Bell
Laboratories..." Although it is not as widely known or utilized as one
might expect, R is a powerful tool which provides a wide variety of
statistical techniques. One of its major strengths is its graphics
capabilities. With R, even the statistically challenged can easily produce
publication-quality graphs and charts, in a variety of image formats (JPEG,
Postscript, and PDF, among others). In this tutorial, I will give a short
introduction to R with a focus on its graphing capabilities.

[001] - Aardvark Topsites PHP 5.1.0
  by Jeremy Scheff (http://freshmeat.net/users/aardvarkfreak/)
  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 00:45

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Aardvark Topsites PHP is the premier PHP/SQL topsites script.
Members' ranks can be shown on their button, and there are 6 different
ranking methods, including pageviews. Powerful anticheating protection is
included. It supports categories. You can use up/down/neutral arrows. The
admin allows you to approve new members, edit existing members, delete bad
members, and much more.

Changes: When an edit form or join form contains errors, the user is now
presented with inline error messages. An RSS feed of the top 10 sites
(overall and by category) is now provided by feed.php. Admin now includes
topical links to the manual for confusing options on the settings page.
Google-friendly links can be disabled. An option to email the admin when a
new review is posted was added. Custom pages make it easy to add static
content to integrate with your topsites (FAQ, rules, etc.). A profanity
filter was included. Overall stats are now displayed on the main page.

  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 12:21

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Security
System :: Monitoring

About: Advchk (Advisory Check) reads security advisories so you don't have
to. Advchk gathers security advisories using RSS feeds, compares them to a
list of known services, and alerts you if you're vulnerable. Since adding
hosts and services by hand would be quite a boring task, advchk leverages
nmap for automatic service and version discovery. Using it can be as
simple as "advchk -a host.name".

  by Nils Hartmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/nilsha/)
  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 03:43

Software Development :: Build Tools

About: The aim of the Ant4eclipse project is to avoid redundancy of
Eclipse and Ant configurations in order to build small but powerful build
systems for the continuous integration process. It provides a set of tasks
for the Apache Ant build tool. This tasks allow developers to use Eclipse
configuration directly from their ant buildfiles. Included are tasks for
reading Eclipse's .classpath file, for computing build order for a set of
projects, and for launching Java applications as defined in Eclipse launch
configurations.

Changes: This release includes PDE support that allows the building of
Eclipse/OSGi-Plugins. C/C++ projects and projects that are outside the
Eclipse workspace are now supported as well.

  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 21:51

About: Beesoft Commander is a file manager (like Norton Commander) for
Linux. It is based on Qt-GUI.

Changes: A new feature for deleting files, called "wipe file", was
implemented. Before delete operations, the user can select a "wipe" option
which will prevent recovery of the deleted file. After "wiping", a file
will be really removed from the disk. A few corrections were made, such
that a user can stop the deleting process at any time.

[010] - darkstat 3.0.471
  by Emil Mikulic (http://freshmeat.net/users/darkmoon/)
  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 12:56

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: darkstat is an ntop-workalike network statistics gatherer. It runs
as a background process on a cable or DSL router, uses libpcap to capture
network traffic, and has a Web interface that serves up reports of
statistics such as data transferred by host, port, and protocol. It also
has a neat bandwidth usage graph.

Changes: The 3.x series is almost a complete rewrite of darkstat. It
replaces the broken pthreads core with a more portable and efficient
single-threaded model, and brings in many feature enhancements, such as
new per-host reports, and compressed Web pages.

  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 22:47

Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion

About: DeVeDe is a program to create video DVDs (compatible with home
players) from nearly any video format. It only uses MPlayer, Mencoder,
DVDAuthor, and MKISOFS, so it has very few dependecies.

Changes: VideoCD, SuperVCD, and CVDs may now be created. The user may
override the default resolution. Custom commands may be passed to
Mencoder. The order of the files and titles may be changed. The interface
is a little more intuitive. Advanced features have been grouped, so
novices will see only the most important options. A litle bug which
occurred when a video header tells that it has an aspect ratio of 0 or 1
was fixed.

[012] - dvd::rip 0.97.11 (Unstable)
  by Jörn Reder (http://freshmeat.net/users/jred/)
  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 12:21

Multimedia :: Video :: Conversion

About: dvd::rip is a full featured DVD copy program written in Perl. It
provides an easy-to-use but feature-rich GTK+ GUI to control almost all
aspects of the ripping and transcoding process. It uses the widely known
video processing swissknife, transcode, and many other Open Source tools.

Changes: The Filters & Preview dialog was finally ported to Gtk2, which
makes dvd::rip 0.97.x now feature complete. Other new features are a
preference option for the default preview grabbing mode and an updated and
GUI-space optimized German translation. A bunch of smaller bugs were fixed,
such as an auto-detection of NPTL workaround, which makes dvd::rip work
out-of-the box on 64-bit platforms.

  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 21:54

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: enemy lines 7 is a game that is a bit experimental. You are a
damaged alien spy probe. With visual systems malfunctioning, all you have
left for navigation is a particle detector. You have to reach your pickup
zone before system failure. Basically, you have to navigate through a 3d
environment in first person view while the only thing you see are a few
dots of the walls here and there.

Changes: Small visual improvements were made. Better movement
optimizations were effected (Frustum culling). Additional levels were
added.

Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System
System :: Archiving

About: Ghost for Linux is a hard disk and partition imaging and cloning
tool similar to "Norton Ghost"(c) and (tm) by Symantec. The created images
are optionally compressed, and they can be stored on a local hard drive or
transferred to an anonymous FTP server. A drive can be cloned using the
"Click'n'Clone" function. g4l supports file splitting if the local
filesystem does not support writing files >2GB. The included kernel
supports ATA, serial-ATA, and SCSI drives. Common network cards are
supported. It is packaged as a bootable CD image with an ncurses GUI for
easy use.

Changes: An NTFSCLONE option was added to network backup. This allows the
creation of backups of the actual data used on an NTFS partition rather
than just a dd image. The default kernel was changed to 2.6.15.6 due to
hardware incompatibilities in 2.6.16.x kernels. 2.6.16.20 is still
available along with other kernels to assure compatibility with the
largest number of systems. A very basic graphic was added to the syslinux
startup.

[020] - Internet DJ Console 0.6.2
  by Stephen Fairchild (http://freshmeat.net/users/psoriasis/)
  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 12:20

About: Internet DJ console is a graphical shoutcast/icecast client that
runs under GTK+ and the JACK audio connection kit. In short, it's an
Internet radio app for making a live radio show or podcast. Features
include two main media players with a crossfader, a jingle player,
microphone signal processing (compressor and noise gate), IRC track
announcements with X-Chat, an automatic stream shut-off timer, MP3 or Ogg
streaming and recording at various bit rates, aux input for connecting
external JACK aware applications, and audio level meters.

Changes: A zero cross switch was added to the pause feature of the
recording facility to prevent audible clicks (this makes the automatic
pause feature fully usable). The digital filters were changed to use
variable type double instead of float because of blowup problems. The
ceiling label in the stream normalizer was changed to read threshold. An
initialization bug in the stream normalizer that could result in audible
clicks was fixed.

Internet :: Name Service (DNS)
System :: Networking :: LDAP

About: ldap2dns is a program to read DNS (Domain Name Service) records
from an LDAP directory and format them into flat files suitable for
TinyDNS (or Bind). ldap2dns reduces all kinds of administration overhead:
no more flat file editing, no more zone file editing. After having
installed ldap2dns, the administrator only has to modify the data stored
in the LDAP directory. Access control can be configured for each zone,
GUIs can be more easily implemented, and all other kinds of zone and
resource record information can be managed without interfering with the
DNS server directly.

Changes: The program now runs and builds cleanly under Solaris. The LDAP
API was updated. SRV support was added for BIND outputs. Potential
segfaults with BIND outputs were fixed. Potential segfaults with improper
command-line options were fixed.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP

About: mod_bt is a BitTorrent tracker for the Apache Web server. It is
written in C and runs as an Apache 2.x module. It is possible for mod_perl
or PHP to directly access the tracker's information; no need to download
and bdecode scrape URLs. The tracker is fully configured from within
Apache's own configuration file. The goal of mod_bt is to seamlessly
integrate Bram Cohen's BitTorrent protocol with Apache so that any
Webmaster who serves up large files can shift the burden of bandwidth onto
its clients with as little hassle as possible.

Changes: A rare but nasty segmentation fault in the tracker was fixed. The
Debian build was improved. Database transactions were fixed. The peer
database was made temporary. Memory allocation was improved. Issues with
building Perl modules on some platforms were fixed. Support for Berkeley

About: Net_NNTP is a PHP/PEAR library for communication with NNTP servers.
Net_NNTP handles connection and protocol-level commands (RFC977), including
many non-standard commands (RFC2980), via a user-friendly API which hides
the actual NNTP commands/syntax. Some knowledge about NNTP and general
knowledge about email and MIME is required, since parsing of content and
headers is left up to the user. Net_NNTP allows advanced users direct
usage of NNTP commands via the separate protocol implementation. Net_NNTP
includes a fully-functional NNTP to HTML gateway demo application.

[038] - Ragel State Machine Compiler 5.8
  by Adrian Thurston (http://freshmeat.net/users/age/)
  Sat, Jun 17th 2006 12:23

Software Development :: Code Generators

About: Ragel compiles finite state machines from regular languages into C,
C++, Objective-C, or D code. It allows the programmer to embed actions at
any point in a regular language and to control non-determinism in the
resulting machines. It understands concatenation, union, kleene star,
subtraction, intersection, epsilon transitions, and various other common
operators. Through the use of labels and epsilon transitions, Ragel
supports the building of state machines using a named state and associated
transition list paradigm. Its finite state machines are closed under all of
its operators. This property allows for arbitrary regular languages to be
described. It can be used to create a parser for any language that is
regular.

Changes: The implementation of the experimental condition embedding
feature now supports range transitions, allowing conditions to be embedded
into arbitrary machines. The internal representation of the alphabet type
was improved. Changes were made to the determination process to support
conditions. The test suite was converted to a format with a single file
per test case.

Information Management :: Issue Tracking
Utilities

About: wtime is a command line utility providing a way to track time spent
on arbitrary tasks. The program serves as a front-end for plain text files
that hold time data. It provides a way to start/stop counting, display
elapsed time, and display time spent in the selected time interval
(defined by start and end date). The aim is to keep the program as simple
as possible.

Changes: Multiple tasks are now supported. A manual page was added. Some
cleanups were done.
