Ever wonder why HP has seven consecutive years of Linux market share

Maybe it's our portfolio of best-of-breed partner products, or HP
value-add in management, high availability, and virtualization. Maybe it's
the integrated, consolidated infrastructure of HP BladeSystem,
single-source accountability and solution support from HP Services in 160
countries, or just our unwavering commitment to the open source community.

  by Carlos Gonzalez (http://freshmeat.net/users/karlhangas/)
  Sat, Jul 1st 2006 13:02

About: Carnarvon is a software archaeology analysis tool. A lot of
software is developed using version control tools from which it is
possible to extract even when a single line of code was most recently
edited. Collecting this kind of data and analyzing it statistically could
show information in terms of software aging, and indicators of
maintainability could be obtained from different perspectives, systems
area and development area, for example.

Changes: This release adds a wizard for creating config files, bugfixes
for subversion support, a new visualization method through Web pages, the
option to use MySQL for data storage, and other bugfixes.

Documentation
Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: Daikon is an implementation of dynamic detection of likely
invariants. An invariant is a property (such as "x=2*y+5" or
"this.next.prev = this" or "myarray is sorted by <") that holds at a
certain point or points in a program. Invariants are often seen in assert
statements, documentation, and formal specifications. Invariants can be
useful in program understanding and a host of other applications. Daikon
runs a program, observes the values that the program computes, and then
reports properties that were true over the observed executions. It can
detect properties in Java, C, C++, Perl, and IOA programs, in spreadsheet
files, and in other data sources.

Changes: Minor enhancements were made to Chicory, Daikon, and Kvasir.
Chicory more accurately determines whether or not a class is a boot
(system) class. Daikon better handles spreadsheet data. Kvasir's DynComp
option more consistently handles array references.

About: The flat assembler is a fast and efficient self-assembling 80x86
assembler for DOS, Windows, and Linux operating systems. It supports all
8086-80486/Pentium instructions with MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, and 3DNow!
extensions and x86-64 (both AMD64 and EM64T) instructions. It can produce
output in binary, MZ, PE, COFF, or ELF format. It includes the powerful
but easy-to-use macroinstruction support, and does multiple passes to
optimize the instruction codes for size. The flat assembler is entirely
written in assembly language.

Changes: Support was added for outputting the 32-bit address relocations
in case of 64-bit object formats. The PE formatter now automatically
detects whether code and data addresses should be relocatable. The
instructions of the SVM extension of the AMD architecture have been
implemented.

About: FreeTDS is an open-source implementation of the TDS (Tabular
DataStream) database client access protocol and related libraries used by
Sybase and Microsoft. FreeTDS supports all versions of the protocol from
both vendors, and includes DB-Lib, CT-Lib, and ODBC libraries.

Changes: As with prior releases, this version supersedes all others.
Db-lib timeout handling was corrected (error handlers can now force the
called function to fail). For Microsoft servers, support for named
instances and for encrypted connections was added. Partial placeholder
support for ct-lib was added. For ODBC, compute-row handling was
corrected, support for paramsets and constant parameters was added, and
compatibility with DBD::ODBC was improved.

About: Gambas is a graphical development environment based on a Basic
interpreter, like Visual Basic. It uses the Qt toolkit, but is able to use
any other toolkit that a module is written for.

Changes: The symbolic links in /usr/bin are not needed anymore. The
interpreter's error management no longer leaks stack, so functions doing a
lot of TRY do not crash the interpreter now. The = and <> comparison
operators now work correctly in any case when comparing a string with
NULL.

[027] - rdup 0.2.14
  by Miek Gieben (http://freshmeat.net/users/miek/)
  Sat, Jul 1st 2006 14:09

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: rdup is a utility inspired by rsync and the Plan9 way of doing
backups. rdup itself does not backup anything; it only prints a list of
the names of files that have changed since the last backup. It also
handles files that are removed, allowing for correct incremental backups.

strategy. This way rdup can be kept lean and mean.

[039] - VRaptor 2.0.5
  by Guilherme Silveira (http://freshmeat.net/users/TechnoBug/)
  Sat, Jul 1st 2006 04:05

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: VRaptor 2 is a Web-based MVC and IOC framework based on many
frameworks and ideas (Seam, Stripes, Webwork, Hibernate Annotations, etc).
It makes full use of Java 5 Annotations. It favors convention over
configuration, because configuration in XML/properties/annotations is
always easy to make mistakes and repetitive (aka copy and paste in many
places). This framework uses a more imperative approach, instead of having
many XML files to configure lifecycle and other properties. Most of the
settings go inside plain Java objects (POJO), so the team knows exactly
what is going on and where.

Changes: This release adds the long-awaited view redirection and file
upload tutorials, along with a few important bugfixes and even more tests.
The mydvds application has been updated to show how to use the file
uploading feature supporting multipart-requests (as it was not supported
in earlier releases). The application now links to the StatsQuery logic,
which shows all of vraptor's configuration in order to help new
programmers using vraptor. It also logs its initialization time, as the
developer can choose either between automatic class loading or registering
components one-by-one.

  Sat, Jul 1st 2006 23:41

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: Ziproxy is a forwarding (non-caching) proxy that gzips text and
HTML files, and reduces the size of images by converting them to lower
quality JPEGs. It is intended to increase the speed for low-speed Internet

name resolution, operation in either daemon mode or (x)inetd mode, a
detailed access log with compression statistics, basic authentication, and
more.
